Self Improvement And Empowerment Blog: Professionalism in the ...

You have to be a professional in the workplace. It is one of the most important criteria used by superiors to evaluate your overall performance. Peers will also judge you according to the professional standards that you demonstrate in the workplace. In fact, professional ethics is very crucial in any corporate environment. It also plays an essential role in your career advancement. You can get hired if the prospective employer finds you to be professional. However, you must note that an employee can also be fired by being unprofessional in the place of work.

Professionalism is not only about wearing suitable corporate attire. You can become professional by practicing the following:

Maintain your mental stability. Keep that temper in check. The last thing you want to happen is to quarrel with your boss and co-workers. Arguments are expected to happen but stay away from getting into conflict with your contemporaries. Avoid the extremes. Do not be too boisterous or very quiet during meetings or company activities. Composure is the key in this environment.

It is important to communicate properly with everyone in the office. Be direct but courteous. Refrain from being too emotional when you interact with colleagues or managers. Besides, this can only reduce your interpersonal capabilities. Concentrate on the subject during discussions.

Stay smart! The clever employee knows what should be done and how to do it. Remember that working hard is not enough. Being smart means that you fulfill the expectations of your supervisors.

Respect works both ways. Have a high regard for the organization, your managers and co-employees and you can be sure to get the same degree of esteem from everyone.

Do not dress too informally or shabbily. Most companies implement a strict dress code so make sure to follow regulations.
It is not right to make unsavory comments or jokes that will hurt somebody's feelings. Never refer to personal appearances, ethnic groups, gender or religious practices.

Never lie or be insincere. Dishonesty will not only lead to termination. It can ruin your image forever. Once you get dismissed for cheating, you will find it difficult to look for another good job. Besides, regaining the trust of other people is hard to achieve.
Controlling your behavior is also necessary. There is nothing wrong in being confident but do not go beyond this. Arrogance has no place in any organization so better watch out for this attitude.

Suggestions for Protecting Enterprise Data - Create Security Line of ...

Dataloss problem has become the current enterprises? constant nightmare. More and more hardware failures and non-physical failures can cause enterprise data to be lost, such as storage medium damage and accidental artificial operations. Facing these increasingly serious problems, if the enterprise security administrator wants to solve data loss problems and provides safe and reliable data protection platform, he must do the following things:

1. Value data backup and prevent data loss: In the informationized management of SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises), users are likely to equate copying data and backing up data. But in fact, there are great essential differences between them. Data backup is not just copying data, but includes backup management and various follow-up data security work. Therefore, every enterprise should value backup problems, and regularly uses backup tools such as BackBone and NetVault to back up important data for enterprise. By this way, we can fast use backup data to recover lost data.

2. Improve?emergency recovery ability to build the last line of defense: as one of the data recovery security methods, the appearance and development of data recovery technology is closely related with constant artificial data security damage (such as accidental operations, hacker attacks and virus attacks) and enterprise data disaster events caused by natural disaster. But unfortunately, many SMEs know little about this technology, and they think such a kind of serious data security disasters only occur in large enterprises. They hardly realize the fact that data security problems has become very common along with the data loss events caused by natural disasters and artificial attacks in recent years. Therefore, before various unpredictable data loss events happen, we should make a preparation for such a kind of situation ? install?data recovery software like MiniTool Power Data Recovery on computer in advance. By this way, we can fast recover the lost data when encountering important data loss problems, decreasing the losses due to long-time data loss.

3. Enhance employees? data security awareness: In previous multiple data loss events, although there were so many data loss problems caused by various natural disasters and artificial malicious damage, related data shows that more than 80 % data loss events are caused by the enterprises insiders? carelessness or intentional confidential data leak. So it is very important to prevent insiders from leaking data. But compared with solving technical problems, it is more difficult to solve this kind of problem. Enterprises should enhance management and develop employees? data security awareness to decrease the problems that insiders unintentionally leak enterprises? confidential files.

These three things are necessary for enterprises security administrator to provide safe and reliable protection platform. I believe you can see from the three points above that they are the methods combining prevention and treatment. Therefore, as long as you do what I say to enhance prevention and use data recovery software to fast?recover lost data when encountering data loss, you can eventually solve the problem of data loss.

Great software recommended for you:?MiniTool Power Data Recovery for?Enterprise Data.

Best Internet Promotion Tips To Improve Your Business - Maynas Eric

The main vehicle for many businesses to market their products today is Online marketing. With all of the choices available you have a lot of options available for how to give your business more profits. Continue reading to get some suggestions that will show you how to effectively market your business.

Reward customers who bring your referrals. You can turn a single sale into many by letting customers have a product that is free for referring a certain number of friends to your site. People love freebies, and it?s been proven that higher traffic leads to higher sales.

Thanks to the internet, there is a certain anonymity involved in conducting business. This is a great method for smaller owned businesses to use. Especially if they have to focus on personal relationships in order to gain customers.

TIP! Offer a short-term incentive or promotion to boost your site?s PageRank. If your deal is hot, deal-tracking sites will send visitors to your site without you having to lift a finger.

Remember that not everyone online has the same type of payment option available to them, so it?s up to you to accept multiple types of payment. If you can do some decent business when you insist on having your customers use credit cards, just imagine how much more you?ll do if you give them other options, like bank account transfers or Paypal.

Open an account on a social networking site like MySpace, and send information and links to people in a targeted market. Don?t spam people though; the media sites have been policing spam recently and have even taken some people to court.

Having a simple URL makes it easier for customers to find you. Try to use your brand or your business name as your site?s name. Create an easy to remember website address so that your customers do not have to look you up in a search engine.

TIP! Offer an online freebie that is related to your company and site. Brand it with your logo, and send it to other websites that offer freebies.

An excellent suggestion for improved internet marketing practices that many webmasters fail to recognize is to make your website simple yet effective. Interactive media like Adobe Flash can be tempting when designing your website, and website designers might try to convince you to use it. Not everyone knows how to navigate their website in the right way, keep this in mind. A website does not need to have a bunch of crazy features, as long as it is efficient and user-friendly.

When you carry a title in your business, respect is easier to come by. If you own your company, you?re now the CEO! If you are not the owner of a business, make sure you have a great title! When signing emails and article, put your name and title in them.

Offer answers to customers on your site. Visitors visit your site to learn information, and if you cannot give it to them, they will look elsewhere. Answer all questions from customers accurately and in a timely manner.

TIP! This following article offers advice and information regarding internet marketing. Always keep a clear objective, and understand that it needs to be on the landing page.

Starting a blog is a great way to increase traffic. Make sure to keep you content new and exciting by posting often. When people find new information on each visit to your site, they?ll keep coming back.

Video marketing is an excellent way to get the word out about your business and really get noticed. If you add videos on your pages it will get the attention of your customer and keep them around. Enticing titles and unusual graphics can attract potential customers and may lead to increased sales.

If you happen to be an excellent writer, then send some of your work about your business to other websites and magazines. The most important thing here is that you remember to include all the necessary information about your particular site and business. Speak to editor and offer a free sample or commissions as an affiliate in return for publishing your articles.

TIP! Expect to have to pay for a high-quality domain name. Chances are, you are not going to find a domain name that is the exact name of your company.

Be sure to take care of customer?s complaints yourself. It may be tempting to hire an outside firm to handle these kinds of situations, but you are sure to get better results if you handle them on your own. Take care of customer complaints personally. Take the time to write them something in return yourself.

Make sure your website covers all the little things, as well as the big. Place your title in the upper right corner on each page with a summary of what your site strives to provide to them. Depending on what internet searches your web visitors perform, they can wind up on many different pages on your site. So if you have information up top, they will be informed.

TIP! When marketing your business online, it?s important that you make your customers feel as if they?re in control. This might require you to set up your content in such a way that the customer actually dictates the flow.

You should know what your target audience is for the product that you carry on you website in order to market effectively to that audience. Knowing your target audience will help you located or create content that will be attractive to it.

Although the words ?internet marketing? may sound complicated, the strategy itself doesn?t have to be! Use the tips provided by this article, improving your presence online and quickly and efficiently reaching the customer base targeted by your product. Many people do much of their communicating online via email and other venues, making the Internet an optimal method for businesses to use.

Produce a Perfect Faux Gerhard Richter Painting, and I'll Buy It | The ...

By Jerry Saltz | Vulture Magazine

I love art, but I hate the astronomical prices it sells for. My skin crawls when I read about auctions, and every year they get grosser. Last month, a living-artist record was set when a 1994 abstract Gerhard Richter painting was sold for $34.2 million. Like a lot of these purchases, the sale was about a collector trying to make art history by spending money. Or big-dick-waving. Ugh.

I want to own art like this, but I?m not rich, and I also think it?s a conflict of interest for a critic to own work that he or she may write about. (Reviews can affect market value.) So, last winter, I put out a call on Facebook. I?d pay anyone $155 plus the cost of materials to make me a perfect fake by Richter, Ryman, Flavin, Fontana, Du?champ, Hirst, Guyton, or Agnes Martin. (Why $155? It?s enough money to me that the painting had to be worth it, and 55 is a funnier number than 50.)

You can?t just call up a guy and order an ersatz Hirst or Richter?unless you are seeking a flat-out forger, but those folks don?t work for $155 and their numbers aren?t listed. Besides, in the art world, noncriminal fakes aren?t news. We don?t even call them ?fakes.? We prefer the term ?appropriation,? whereby a new artwork incorporates or reproduces another. Copyists lie on a continuum: At one end, you have extremely original artists (Richard Prince, Elaine Sturtevant) who use the old to make something new. At the other, you have people deceiving buyers. In between, you have artists who merely make covers, trying to get attention; slipstream behind the famous; and offer simplistic observations. Plus some who are just goofing around. Read More...

Pakistan, Afghanistan trying to turn Taliban into political movement

KABUL (Reuters) - Pakistan is genuine about backing the nascent Afghan peace process and shares the Kabul government's goal of transforming the Taliban insurgency into a political movement, a senior Afghan government official told Reuters.

"They have told us that they share the vision contained in our roadmap which is basically to transform the Taliban from a military entity into a political entity to enable them to take part in the Afghan political process and peacefully seek power like any other political entity in Afghanistan, he said.

"This is the vision that they share."

The official, who is closely involved in reconciliation efforts, said recent face-to-face talks between senior Taliban members and Afghan officials in France were an "enormously helpful" step in building a wider environment for peace.

Until now, the Taliban and Afghan officials only made indirect contacts.

The official's remarks signaled unprecedented optimism from Afghanistan that Pakistan - long accused of backing Afghan insurgent groups - was now willing to put its weight behind reconciliation efforts, which are still in early stages and are vulnerable to factionalism.

"We are very optimistic. We believe that they are genuine in this discussion with us," said the senior government official.

The senior official cautioned, however, that in order to sustain that optimism, Pakistan would need to take further concrete steps after releasing some mid-level Afghan Taliban members from detention, who may be useful in promoting peace.

The nuclear-armed South Asian nation, a strategic U.S. ally, is seen as critical to U.S. and Afghan efforts to stabilize the country before most NATO combat troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

WARRING FACTIONS

Pakistan's powerful army chief has made reconciling warring factions in Afghanistan a top priority, Pakistani military officials and Western diplomats told Reuters, the clearest signal yet that Islamabad means business in promoting peace with the Taliban.

General Ashfaq Kayani, arguably the most powerful man in Pakistan, is backing dialogue partly due to fears that the end of the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014 could energize a resilient insurgency straddling the shared frontier, according to commanders deployed in the region.

The senior Afghan government official has a similar assessment.

"I think there is a sense that we are also getting, that cooperation from Pakistan now is bound to be meaningful, substantive," he said.

"The reason is frankly, most in Pakistan, in our view, have reached the conclusion that time is running out. That it is no longer just about Afghanistan's instability and Afghanistan's insecurity but it's very much a question of security for themselves."

The Haqqani network -- which has far more experience in guerrilla warfare than the Afghan Taliban - would be welcomed to the peace process as long as it met certain conditions, said the official.

"From our point of view, the door of peace is open to anyone. The Haqqanis are a pretty challenging group of people," he said.

"But if they choose to come over to the peace process, then I am sure the peace process will include them."

Pakistan's intelligence agency denies Afghan accusations that it uses the Haqqani network and other militant groups as proxies to counter the influence of rival India in Afghanistan.

The Haqqanis are blamed for a number of high-profile attacks on Western targets, including embassies, in Kabul, highlighting the resilience of insurgents after years of fighting Western forces equipped with superior firepower and technology.

Stolen puppy back at Oregon Humane Society in Northeast Portland ...

The tiny bundle of fur is back at the Oregon Humane Society after the agency appealed to the public for help finding a stolen puppy named John.

The 3-lb., 3-month-old pup? was recovered by police and humane society staff on Monday, said David Lytle, spokesman for the society.

"We got an anonymous tip," he said. "The puppy is back at OHS."

The caller reported seeing the dog, a reddish brown? Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, in Gresham. Sure enough, Gresham police recovered the dog at the reported address. Lytle did not have any details about who lives at the home where the dog was recovered. He said it was picked about 7 p.m. by Gresham police with the help of two Oregon Humane Society staff. They were equipped with a scanner to get a positive ID from the puppy's microchip.

"You want to be sure," Lytle said. "The microchip is a unique identifying number."

Microchipping is part of the society's adoption services, which include spaying or? neutering, initial shots and an ID collar. Fees vary. The adoption fee for John was $400, which a family in Camas, Wash., had already paid. But they didn't get to take him home. He was stolen on Saturday.

He'll be home by Christmas. A reunion with the family is planned for 2 p.m. at the society's headquarters at 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd.

So far no one's been arrested. The society suspects a man in his early 40s, about 5-foot-6, with a thin build, light-brown hair and mustache.

The society offered a reward of $500 to crack the case. Lytle said the investigation is ongoing.

Great Ideas To Help You Make Great Meals!

Interested in saving money? In today's economy, who among us isn't? What about losing weight and improving your overall health? If your answer is a resounding YES, then making one change in your life can help you accomplish all three of those goals! The solution is as close as your kitchen.

When cooking with raw meat or eggs, it is very important that you keep your hands and cooking station very sanitary. This is because the raw form of these materials can spread illnesses, such as salmonella, to you. If you do contract an illness, you will be very sick and won't be cooking for a while!

Store your spices in a cool, dark place, such as a cabinet or pantry. One of the biggest cooking mistakes people make is storing herbs and spices above the stove. The heat, humidity and light will causes herbs and spices to lose their flavor. For the most flavorful meals, take good care of your spices.

Pesto cooking tip! When you are using pesto sauce, make sure you never heat it up! If you want to have it in a pasta or soup dish, it is best if you cook the food first - then add the uncooked pesto. This is important because cooking pesto will make the basil have a bitter taste.

To minimize freezer burn when attempting to freeze foods try placing foods in a zip-lock freezer bag and close it most of the way but allow enough room to insert a drinking straw through the small opening. Squeeze out as much air as possible, and suck the rest out through the straw, pinching the bag the rest of the way closed when the air is gone. Less air exposure in the bag means fresher, freezer-burn-free foods when you are ready to defrost them.

Cooking hamburgers seems to be easy, but there are some tricks to learn. Make a hole in the center of the patty before you put it on the grill. The hole prevents the meat from rising in the middle so you won't have an uncooked middle with burnt edges any more. The whole will completely disappear during cooking so no one will notice your trick.

After cooking, always let your meat rest before serving it. This is especially true when you pull meat from a hot grill. Moisture that keeps your meat tender is sealed within it. When you cut steaming hot meat, the steam that rises is actually the moisture leaving the meat. When you let meat "settle" for at least 15 minutes prior to serving, the moisture and tenderness is preserved.

When pressing sticky ingredients into a baking pan such as marshmallow treats or cheesy casseroles, be sure to coat the back of a spoon with non-stick cooking spray before using it. This prevents the sticky goo from sticking to the spoon and makes it possible to evenly smooth the food into the pan. You can reapply spray as needed.

Preparing more of your own meals has numerous financial and health-related benefits, and regardless of your motivations for cooking, you'll see the benefits in various aspects of your life. You'll also take a great deal of pride and satisfaction in preparing a delicious, home-cooked meal. So what are you waiting for? Go get to it!

On Sunday morning, Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association, told the world that armed guards stopped school shootings in Israel. Israel begs to differ. "Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing," LaPierre said sitting calmly on Meet the Press. "They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school, and they have not had a problem since then."

Explainer: Naming of Parts for an Instrument of Civilian Slaughter

Generic illustration of a cluster bomb releasing a swarm of bomblets, depicted as grey canisters. Diagram Source: Norwegian People's Aid

The PTAB 2.5M anti-armor bomblet has a cylindrical body with a dome-shaped ballistic cap at its front and it terminates in a four-fin tail unit that is structured in a drum configuration. In its Aug. 2, 2012 online posting, Jane?s Air-Launched Weapons noted that the tail unit comes in both short and long versions.

The entire bomblet measures 0.87 meters in length, has a body diameter of 60 millimeters and weighs 2.5 kilograms. Just behind the nose is a shaped charge weighing 660 grams and consisting of a RDX/TNT mixture, which is detonated by an ADTS-583 impact fuze.

Thirty or more bomblets, or sub-munitions, fit into the RBK-250-275 cluster bombs and the RBK 500 can carry 75. The PTAB 2.5M is able to penetrate up to 120 millimeters of armor. The Soviets originally designed the PTAB 2.5M to be dropped on lines of Allied tanks steadily advancing toward the Iron Curtain countries. On Dec 12, while many were fretting or making jokes about the Mayan Apocalypse, Syrian military aircraft released RBK 250s on the civilian population of Marea, near Aleppo. For a few civilians from Marea, the world did end.

How The Micro-hybrid Revolution Will Radically Change The Battery ...

John Petersen

In late October I gave a keynote presentation at Batteries 2012, one of the largest lithium-ion battery conferences in the world. During the conference, I was buttonholed for a couple hours by the chairman's global strategy team for one of the top three lithium-ion battery manufacturers in the world. They started by explaining that their Global 100 company is abandoning the plug-in vehicle market to focus on sensible applications where it can earn a reasonable margin. Then they started drilling down with a series of detailed and probing questions about whether any of the principal lead-acid battery markets might be an attractive opportunity for a company with their size, scale and stature.

While it may strike some of my readers as heresy, I told them that the lead-acid battery sector's biggest vulnerability was in the rapidly evolving micro-hybrid market where industry leaders Johnson Controls (JCI) and Exide Technologies (XIDE) were focusing on the battery products they wanted to sell instead of the battery solutions their customers needed. After all, if legacy industry leaders won't respond to changing customer needs, then it's high time for new leaders that will respond.

The micro-hybrid revolution

Micro-hybrids are the most sensible automotive fuel efficiency technology imaginable. The primary goal of all micro-hybrids is simple: turn the engine off when it's not powering the wheels. Last February, in a report titled ?Every Last Drop: Micro? And Mild Hybrids Drive a Huge Market for Fuel?Efficient Vehicles,? Lux Research segregated micro-hybrids into three broad classes:

  • Light Micro-Hybrids, which reduce fuel consumption by about 5%, are typically compact and sub-compact cars that offer limited stop-start functionality and don't have regenerative braking.
  • Medium Micro-Hybrids, which reduce fuel consumption by about 10%, are sub-compact through full-size cars that offer greater stop-start functionality and may offer limited regenerative braking.
  • Heavy Micro-Hybrids, which reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%, are usually mid- and full-size cars that offer the highest level of stop-start functionality, take full advantage of regenerative braking and offer a variety of advanced fuel economy innovations like high speed coasting.
While micro-hybrids are a new idea to most Americans, over half of new cars sold in Europe already use the technology and the U.S. is certain to follow suit over the next few years as automakers scramble to meet these short-term corporate average fuel economy standards.

2015 36.2 27.5 32.6
2016 37.8 28.8 34.1

This graph from Lux shows how the global micro-hybrid market is expected to evolve over the next five years and grow from about five million units in 2011 to almost forty million units a year by 2017.

12.21.12 Lux Graph.png

On a regional basis, Lux forecasts that:

  • The European micro-hybrid market will grow from over 4 million units in 2011 to 12.6 million units by 2017.
  • The North American micro-hybrid market will grow from a standstill in 2011 to over 8 million units by 2017.
  • The Japanese micro-hybrid market will grow from about 400,000 units in 2011 to over 6 million units by 2017.
  • The Chinese micro-hybrid market will grow from under 300,000 units in 2011 to 8.9 million units by 2017.
It will be the fastest technology revolution in automotive history. The reason for the speedy ramp is simple. Micro-hybrid technology won't be a consumer option. Instead it will be standard fuel economy equipment.

The mechanical changes required to implement micro-hybrid technology are simple and cheap. One big challenge is that a micro-hybrid turns its engine off at every stop and turns it back on when the driver takes his foot off the brake. A second and even bigger challenge is that automakers want micro-hybrid systems to be transparent to their customers. The accessories have to keep working when the engine is off and they can't stutter or fade when the engine restarts. It's an immense challenge for the conventional lead-acid batteries we've all come to know and hate.

This graph from BMW shows the typical load on a micro-hybrid battery during an engine off event and the subsequent charge recovery cycle.

12.21.12 Duty Cycle.png

The block on the left (in red) represents the engine off period. The accessories draw 575 watts of power for a minute (34,500 watt-seconds) and the starter draws an additional 3,600 watts for one second. The car doesn't start re-charging the battery (in green) until it's done accelerating. Once the battery has recovered, the car draws 80 watts of power for another minute (4,800 watt seconds) before the next engine off event. In total, the duty cycle requires the battery to deliver and recover 42,300 watt seconds of power per cycle. With an average of one engine off event per mile, a micro-hybrid will demand 654,000 watt-seconds from its battery during a 16 mile commute where a conventional car would only need 6,000 watt-seconds.

The bottom line is that micro-hybrids require their batteries to do 100 times the work and if the batteries can't stand the strain, the mechanical systems can't deliver the fuel savings. Micro-hybrid systems that fail quickly because of feeble batteries are nothing more than green-wash. The automakers understand that problem and over the medium- to long-term they can't settle for less. There's always a bit of regulatory rubber when new technologies are being introduced and refined, but once a new technology becomes widespread the regulators get far more demanding.

Legacy manufacturers' initial response

Last week I wrote an exclusive article for Seeking Alpha that explained the differences between the two principal classes of lead acid batteries. It described flooded lead acid batteries as "Lead-acid 1.0" and AGM batteries as "Lead-acid 2.0." It further explained that the various types of enhanced flooded batteries are the equivalent of Lead-acid 1.x while various types of enhanced AGM batteries are the equivalent of Lead-acid 2.x. Since the analogy resonated deeply with many readers who were previously confused about the issue, I've decided to continue using that classification system.

This graph from a presentation at the recent European Lead Battery Conference shows what happens to the dynamic charge acceptance of three different types of AGM batteries over one year of simulated service using the BMW micro-hybrid duty cycle. The basic AGM battery, Lead-acid 2.0, is the blue line on the bottom. An enhanced AGM battery with graphite paste additives, Lead-acid 2.x, is the red line in the middle. A second type of enhanced AGM battery with expanded graphite and activated carbon paste additives, Lead-acid 2.x.y, is the green line.

12.21.12 AGM DCA.png

A brand new AGM battery that can accept a 50 amp charging current will take 72 seconds to recover the energy consumed during an engine off cycle. A one-year-old AGM battery that can only accept a 10 amp charging current will take 430 seconds to recover that energy. A micro-hybrid that can turn the engine off once a minute will always save more fuel than a micro-hybrid that can only turn the engine off once every seven minutes.

This graph is the main reason I told the lithium-ion battery manufacturer that the lead-acid battery industry was vulnerable in the micro-hybrid market. Instead of recognizing and accepting the reality that Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x will never be suitable for micro-hybrids, the industry leaders were stubbornly promoting improved versions of legacy products that can't provide the performance the automakers must have. Since my meeting in October the dynamic has gotten significantly better and if it continues, my concerns over vulnerability will rapidly pass.

Legacy manufacturers' evolving responses

The last two months have been a fascinating time as the two biggest legacy manufacturers started to back away from their earlier insistence that Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x would be ideal solutions for micro-hybrids.

The first legacy manufacturer to soften it's position was Exide Technologies, which announced a strategic alliance with Maxwell Technologies (MXWL) in mid-November. The two companies plan to jointly develop and market integrated battery-ultracapacitor solutions for a wide array of transportation and industrial applications. While the details remain sketchy, it appears that the Maxwell-Exide alliance will offer a micro-hybrid solution that's similar to a system launched by Maxwell and Continental AG in the fall of 2010. That system pairs an AGM battery from Continental with a 2,400 Farad ultracapacitor module from Maxwell. The combination is reportedly very good at avoiding voltage sags and accessory fade when the engine restarts, but it can't address the biggest energy drain in a micro-hybrid; the 60-seconds of accessory use during an engine off interval. Since the Maxwell-Continental system only addresses the engine restart loads, the problems with rapidly declining dynamic charge acceptance in the AGM battery remain and so do the performance deterioration issues.

The second legacy manufacturer to significantly change its position was Johnson Controls which surprised many during last week's "Strategic Review and 2013 Outlook Analyst Presentation." In that presentation the president of JCI's Power Solutions unit came right out and said that Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x were not adequate solutions for heavy micro-hybrids. He then went on to explain that JCI was planning to launch an integrated lead-acid and lithium-ion battery solution that would use a 12-volt lead-acid battery for the engine start load and a 42-volt lithium-ion battery for the accessory loads. Curiously, JCI continues to claim that Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x will be ideal solutions for light and medium micro-hybrids even though those vehicles just have a milder case of the battery problems that plague heavy micro-hybrids. I expect that position to evolve into something more reasonable over the next couple years.

The emergence of Lead-acid 3.0

Over the last decade immense progress has been made in the development of an entirely new class of lead-acid battery that integrates components from conventional lead-acid batteries and supercapacitors into an entirely new class of device. These asymmetric lead-carbon capacitors, Lead-acid 3.0, use normal pasted lead-grids for their positive electrodes and sophisticated carbon electrode assemblies for their negative electrodes. One of these devices, the PbC battery from Axion Power International (AXPW.OB) has proven to be a very promising solution for the power demands of micro-hybrids. This graph from Axion's recent presentation at the European Lead Battery Conference shows why.

12.21.12 PbC DCA.png

While a top-quality AGM battery starts out with the ability to accept a 50 amp charging current but rapidly fades over the first year of service, the PbC is able to accept a 100 amp charging current for almost five years without degradation and its charge acceptance doesn't fall into the 50 amp range for almost nine years. The PbC recently completed a three-year performance-testing regime at BMW, which has reportedly sent its results to a third-party for an independent peer review. The next logical step in the process will be fleet testing prior to a production decision. When BMW conducted fleet testing of AGM batteries for micro-hybrids in 2007, the work took six months. While testing of the PbC may take more time, it shouldn't take much longer because there's very little an OEM can learn in a car that it hasn't already learned in the laboratory.

Three years ago the PbC was a promising dark horse contender in the battle for position in the micro-hybrid battery space, but it hadn't proven its mettle in performance and validation testing by automakers. Today the principal validation and testing work has been completed and while there's a chance that fleet testing will reveal issues that weren't discovered in the testing laboratories, that possibility is remote. My inner optimist wants to believe fleet testing can be completed in time for a 2014 model year design win next September. My inner pragmatist thinks a design win for the 2015 model year is more likely.

The next likely steps

The recent actions of Exide and JCI evidence a dawning realization that the micro-hybrid revolution will require more robust and more costly energy storage systems than automakers are used to buying. In JCI's strategic review Mr. Molinaroli spent a good deal of time discussing the economic constraints on battery manufacturers. He said that while consumers were willing to accept a three-year payback on fuel economy systems, they weren't willing to pay more. That suggests that automakers will strive to reach the following price targets for the battery systems in the three classes of micro-hybrids assuming fuel savings of 5%, 10% and 15%, and gasoline prices of $3.50 and $4.00 a gallon.

Vehicle Class
Savings
$3.50 Gas
$4.00 gas
Light Micro-hybrid 5% $210 $240
Medium Micro-hybrid 10% $420 $480
Heavy Micro-hybrid 10% $630 $720

These are challenging price points, particularly when you get into systems that integrate two different types of energy storage devices and have to design sophisticated control electronics to accommodate the differences.

In all probability, Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x will be the only viable solutions for light-micro hybrids because the price targets are so low. The most likely solution will be dual battery system that uses a flooded battery for the engine start loads and an AGM battery for the accessory loads. The probability that a single battery system will survive over the long term is remote.

The medium micro-hybrid space presents a significant challenge for both the automakers and the battery industry. The dual battery systems that are likely to dominate the light micro-hybrid space won't be adequate for the heavier demands of medium micro-hybrids. In particular, the rapidly declining charge acceptance of Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x will preclude extensive use of regenerative braking which depends on the battery's ability to rapidly accept a regenerative charge during a short braking interval. While the capabilities of integrated battery-ultracapacitor systems are better than dual battery systems alone, the medium micro-hybrid niche is a natural target for the PbC once it finishes the performance and validation testing process.

The heavy micro-hybrid space is shaping up as a real battleground between the dual battery chemistry systems proposed by JCI and Axion's PbC. Lithium-ion batteries do have the charge acceptance characteristics required for large accessory loads and aggressive regenerative braking but they're expensive and very complex, particularly when you get into higher voltage automotive systems that require significant changes to a large number of established control and accessory systems. In the heavy micro-hybrid market, I believe the PbC will enjoy a significant cost advantage.

Who benefits and when?

I love talking about the intricacies of battery technologies but understand full well that the primary question in the minds of investors is "who benefits and when?" The short sweet answer is every company in the sector.

Automakers are building micro-hybrids today and they want to build more aggressive micro-hybrids next year and the year after that. The only battery manufacturers who have the near-term ability to satisfy the automakers needs for better energy storage systems are the legacy leaders JCI and Exide. Both of these companies can expect significant increases in their per vehicle revenues and margins over the next few years. The rapid revenue and margin gains already baked into the business cake but they're not yet reflected in the stock prices. No matter how the micro-hybrid battery market develops, these legacy leaders will remain leaders for years to come.

Another near-term beneficiary is Maxwell which should see its ultracapacitor sales ramp rapidly as automakers strive to minimize voltage sags and accessory fade during engine restart cycles. The integrated AGM battery and ultracapacitor combination is not an ideal long-term solution to the dynamic charge acceptance problems that plague Lead-acid 1.x and 2.x, but it is a very good solution for automakers that want their micro-hybrid systems to remain transparent to drivers.

In the medium- to long-term, I believe Axion's PbC presents the greatest upside potential and the greatest risk. OEM testing has proven that the PbC offers extraordinary performance in the micro-hybrid duty cycle. While the test results have been great, the critical steps of fleet testing and contract negotiation haven't started yet, so the PbC is still a year or two away from a formal design win. First generation PbC batteries are relatively expensive, but the materials used in a PbC battery are no? more costly than the materials used in a conventional AGM battery. As Axion increases production from start-up volumes to credible commercial quantities, its opportunities for economies of scale and experience curve effects are tremendous. Over the longer term Axion wants to become a component supplier to the legacy leaders, rather than a competitor. While it will have to overcome a good deal of "not invented here" thinking, if the automakers demand the PbC's performance, their battery suppliers will have no choice.

While pharmaceutical and biotech investors understand the importance of R&D stage companies that are advancing from Phase II clinical testing to Phase III efficacy trials, unique new battery technologies are rare enough that the market hasn't come to grips with the striking differences between where the PbC technology was in 2009 and where it is today. The last three years have been a PR drought because there isn't much to talk about while the tests are being conducted. That dynamic will change significantly over the next year as first tier OEMs and battery users in automotive, railroad, heavy trucking and stationary applications launch a series of large scale demonstration projects as a prelude to commercialization.

Many causes for learning lags in tumor disorder | Newsroom ...

The causes of learning problems associated with an inherited brain tumor disorder are much more complex than scientists had anticipated, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis report.

The disorder, neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), is among the most common inherited pediatric brain cancer syndromes. Children born with NF1 can develop low-grade brain tumors, but their most common problems are learning and attention difficulties.

?While one of our top priorities is halting tumor growth, it?s also important to ensure that these children don?t have the added challenges of living with learning and behavioral problems,? says senior author David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor of Neurology. ?Our results suggest that learning problems in these patients can be caused by more than one factor. Successful treatment depends on identifying the biological reasons underlying the problems seen in individual patients with NF1."

The study appears online in Annals of Neurology.

According to Gutmann, who is director of the Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center, scientists are divided when considering the basis for NF1-associated learning abnormalities and attention deficits.

Mutations in the Nf1 gene can disrupt normal regulation of an important protein called RAS in the hippocampus, a brain region critical for learning. Initial work from other investigators had shown that increased RAS activity due to defective Nf1 gene function impairs memory and attention in some Nf1 mouse models.

However, earlier studies by Gutmann and collaborator David F. Wozniak, PhD, research professor in psychiatry, showed that a mutation in the Nf1 gene lowers levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in attention. In this Nf1 mouse model, Gutmann and his colleagues found that the branches of dopamine-producing nerve cells were unusually short, limiting their ability to make and distribute dopamine and leading to reduced attention in those mice.

The new research suggests that both sides may be right.

In the latest study, postdoctoral fellow Kelly Diggs-Andrews, PhD, found that the branches of dopamine-producing nerve cells that normally extend into the hippocampus are shorter in Nf1 mice. As a result, dopamine levels are lower in that part of the brain.

Charles F. Zorumski, MD, the Samuel B. Guze Professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry, showed that the low dopamine levels disrupts the ability of nerve cells in the hippocampus to modulate the way they communicate with each other. These communication adjustments are a primary way the brain creates memories.

Researchers then found that giving Nf1 mice L-DOPA, which increases dopamine levels, restored their nerve cell branch lengths to normal and corrected the hippocampal communication defect. L-DOPA also eliminated the memory and learning deficits in these mice.

?These results and the earlier findings suggest that there are a variety of ways that NF1 may cause cognitive dysfunction in people,? Gutmann says. ?Some may have problems caused only by increased RAS function, others may be having problems attributable to reduced dopamine, and a third group may be having difficulties caused by both RAS and dopamine abnormalities.?

To customize patient therapy, Gutmann and his colleagues are now working to develop ways to quantify the contributions of dopamine and RAS to NF1-related learning disorders.

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry gets matte black paint job, keeps old OS

Is it even possible to get more exclusive than RIM and Porsche Design's P'9981 Blackberry? We're not sure, but the phone's coming back (at least to Porsche Design's boutique stores) in a matte black finish. For high-flyers with low expectations, the device packs a QWERTY keyboard in the same exotic typeface, 2.8-inch 640 x 480 touchscreen and Porsche Design's UI, running on a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor. but if you're willing to shell out around $2,350 for this particular phone, you probably don't care about any of that. The Vertu-baiting smartphone will appear in shops mid-January 2013 -- unfortunately right before RIM takes the wrappings of its new OS and new hardware.

Turn down the volume at work ??? Business Management Daily ...

man yelling at woman through megaphoneMost people would agree that it?s important to manage your emotions in the office.

But is it appropriate to create official policies that would ban heated exchanges?

That?s what one reader asked recently on the Admin Pro Forum:? ?

?Our HR department is thinking of levying a policy that would discipline an employee for ?raising his or her voice in anger? when involved in a verbal exchange inside the office.

?Some here say it?s high time that hotheads learn to debate respectfully so as not to poison the atmosphere, but this seems to reach too far to control worker behavior. I?d love to know what ?others think be?fore I vote on the policy!? ? Cassandra, an accounts payable specialist.

Readers offered their take on the issue.

Some felt like this would be an appropriate boundary for an organization to set, even as they acknowledged that it would have to be worded and enforced carefully.

One reader, Amy, shared a story about how a similar policy made an impact in her workplace.

?About 15 years ago, I worked in an environment where anger/raised voices in the workplace began suddenly and seemed to slowly spread,? she wrote.

The company ?implemented a policy where, if there was an altercation in the office, each party would be put on ?probation? and the primary aggressor was sent to anger management classes, no matter what position they held. ... I left soon after the policy was set, but it did make my remaining time in the office more peaceful and productive.?

Another reader agreed. ?I actually like this idea, depending on what you mean by discipline,? Branson wrote.

?We have people who work in our office (an accounting firm) who get stressed out and carry on like crazy people, which just make things even more stressful. If they know that they will without a doubt get a talking to if they get carried away, maybe they?d control themselves just out of pride, since no one likes to be disciplined in even a minor way.?

But the wording on your policy should be crystal clear.

Others thought such a policy could just lead to more trouble because it?s so subjective.

?This could be very hard to regulate,? DeeCee wrote. ?Raising one?s voice doesn?t necessarily mean anything bad, and who judges how much is too much? If you used that against one person, then you would have to be equally strict with everyone else. I think there can be some policies on self-restraint and discipline, but it would probably have to cover more than just a raised voice.

?I think overall demeanor would have to be considered, and probably a warning or notice given to someone that he is approaching the limit. Again, this would have to be equally applied to all persons.?

Finally, many were worried that it missed the real issue.

??While rage is on the increase in a lot of workplace environments, volume is just one part of the issue,? Tara wrote.

?Really, disrespectful and bullying behavior is the biggest problem, and that can be accomplished at any volume.

?You could whisper and still be harassing someone. This just seems like it would be an ineffective ?policy. It?s well-intentioned but a bit misguided.?

Thirty-three new trapdoor spider species discovered in the American southwest

Dec. 20, 2012 ? A researcher at the Auburn University Museum of Natural History and Department of Biological Sciences has reported the discovery 33 new trapdoor spider species from the American Southwest. These newly described species all belong to the genus Aptostichus that now contains 40 species, two of which are already famous -- Aptostichus stephencolberti and Aptostichus angelinajolieae.

The genus now includes other such notable species as Aptostichus barackobamai, named for Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, and reputed fan of Spiderman comics; Aptostichus edwardabbeyi, named for environmentalist and author Edward Abbey (1927-1989); Aptostichus bonoi from Joshua Tree National Park, named for the lead singer of the Irish rock band U2; Aptostichus pennjillettei named for illusionist and intellectual Penn Jillette; Aptostichus chavezi, named for Mexican American and civil rights and labor activist C?sar Ch?vez (1927-1993).

Other notable new species names include Aptostichus anzaborrego, known only from the Anza Borrego Desert State Park in southern California; and Aptostichus sarlacc from the Mojave Desert, named for George Lucas' Star Wars creature, the Sarlacc from the fictional desert planet Tatooine.

The researcher, Prof. Jason Bond, who is a trapdoor spider expert and the director of the Auburn University Museum of Natural History was excited at the prospect of such a remarkable and large find of new species here in the United States and particularly California.

"California is known as what is characterized as a biodiversity hotspot. Although this designation is primarily based on plant diversity, the region is clearly very rich in its animal diversity as well. While it is absolutely remarkable that a large number of species from such a heavily populated area have gone unnoticed, it clearly speaks volumes to how little we know of the biodiversity around us and that many more species on the planet await discovery " Bond said.

Like other trapdoor spider species, individuals are rarely seen because they live their lives in below-ground burrows that are covered by trapdoors, made by the spider using mixtures of soil, sand, and/or plant material, and silk. The trapdoor serves to hide the spider when it forages for meals at the burrow entrance, usually at night.

Aptostichus species are found in an amazing number of Californian habitats to include coastal sand dunes, chaparral, desert, oak woodland forests, and at high altitudes in the alpine habitats of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Bond said, "this particular group of trapdoor spiders are among some of the most beautiful with which I have worked; species often have gorgeous tiger-striping on their abdomens. Aptostichus to my mind represents a true adaptive radiation -- a classical situation in evolutionary biology where diversification, or speciation, has occurred such that a large number of species occupy a wide range of different habitats."

Bond also noted that while a number of the species have rather fanciful names, his favorite is the one named for his daughter Elisabeth. "Elisabeth's spider is from an incredibly extreme desert environment out near Barstow, California that is the site of a relatively young volcanic cinder cone. The spiders make their burrows among the lava tubes that extend out from the cone -- it is a spectacular place to visit but the species is very difficult to collect because the spiders build rather deep burrow among the rocks."

Cee Lo: Nicholas 'should have won' 'The Voice'

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Season three of "The Voice" is over, and coach Cee Lo Green has nothing but well wishes for winner Cassadee Pope. But don't mistake his support for acceptance of the results.

"I really did think that my Nicholas (David) did have a very strong chance, and I do believe that he should have won," he told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Thursday morning, just prior to a performance of "This Christmas" from his album, "Cee Lo's Magic Moment."

Nicholas was the last remaining member of Team Cee Lo, and when Cassadee beat him out, that meant Blake Shelton's team had provided winners two seasons in a row.?

But, added Cee Lo quickly, "Cassadee is really talented, so we also congratulate her as well."

He also assured everyone that while he's taking a break from the competition next season, he's definitely coming back for season 5 of the show.

The winner herself also showed up on the TODAY Plaza to discuss the win, which she's still getting used to. "Hearing (host) Carson (Daly) say my name was just unreal," she said. "I felt like I was dreaming."

Prior to coming on "The Voice," Cassadee was the lead singer for a band called Hey Monday. And now that the finale is over, she says she's working on getting back up to speed in the real world, since being "sequestered in a hotel for the past two months" was a little isolating.

But, as she noted: "It's like a whirlwind, but I'm so ready -- I've been ready for years, and it's ... finally happening."
