Montreal's populist former archbishop says Canadian pope a possibility

MONTREAL - Montreal's populist former archbishop says Quebecers will be proud if one of their own becomes the new pontiff.

Jean-Claude Cardinal Turcotte is keeping his voting intentions to himself, although he says he'd be proud if Marc Cardinal Ouellet emerged as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Turcotte is leaving for Rome tonight and will be among the cardinals who participate in the conclave to choose a replacement for Pope Benedict XVI.

The pontiff steps down officially on Thursday and no specific date has been set for the beginning of the vote.

Ouellet is among the favourites. The native of the Quebec town of La Motte is head of the powerful Congregation for Bishops, which vets bishop nominations worldwide.

In total, three Canadians will vote on the next pope ? Turcotte, Ouellet and Thomas Cardinal Collins of Toronto.

Turcotte told a news conference in Montreal today that the former archbishop of Quebec City isn't the only possibility and that several candidates fit the bill.

Cardinals will meet before the conclave and Turcotte says the discussion is likely to centre on problems facing the church ? notably the erosion of the clergy in North America and Europe as well as the scandals that continue to plague the institution.

Turcotte is participating in his second conclave.

Another iOS 6.1 Bug Allows Thieves to Bypass Your Lock Screen

Another iOS 6.1 Bug Allows Thieves to Bypass Your Lock ScreenAnother iOS 6.1 Bug Allows Thieves to Bypass Your Lock Screen Researchers have discovered another lock screen bug in iOS 6.1, which allows someone to get past your lock screen without a passcode and view that phone's data after plugging it into a computer.

Hackers recently found an iOS 6 bug that let thieves into your phone, but they could only access the Phone app and the features contained within. This new bug, however, is a bit more open, allowing attackers to plug in the phone via USB and access its data (like contacts, voicemails, photos, and more) without needing a passcode. The trick is remarkably similar to the other lock screen bug in iOS 6, but involves using the screenshot tool as well as the emergency call button to get in. Check out the video above to see it in action, and watch out for the loud annoying music.

Apple promises to close this bug with the next version of iOS, 6.1.3. However, 6.1.3 also breaks the latest jailbreak, so it's a tradeoff. Once again, this is a good reason to enable Find My iPhone, so if your phone does get lost or stolen, you can wipe your data and protect it from ne'er-do-wells.

Allergy friendly, family friendly FOOD: Raspberry Tea Scented ...

I have not had the greatest luck with gluten free vegan cupcakes. ?It's not that they are terrible, but they just aren't THERE yet. ?Either the flavor is slightly off, or the texture. ?I'll get it. ?Eventually. ?I did kill the vegan birthday cake recipe when I was using gluten, so I know this too will come.

In the meantime, for my birthday I wanted icing with a bit more flavor than my standard vanilla. ?Something not overpowering, but strong enough to hide those mild imperfections. ?So, I went to the kitchen in search of inspiration for flavor that is naturally derived, not concocted in someone's lab.

I have no idea what inspired me to look into the tea cupboard (Yes, I have an entire cupboard of tea. ?My little people drink herbal tea every morning when they wake up.) ?There were flavors there that spoke to me. ?The hard part was narrowing it down to one...

Raspberry white tea. ?Delicate in flavor yet prominent enough to steal the stage if need be.

My icing recipe only calls for 1/4 cup of liquid, and I knew the tea would need to be brewed quite strong in order to carry the needed flavor to the icing. ?My brain was whirring. ?How to improve the process?

AHA! Why not brew the tea in the shortening? ?Yep. ?Melt the shortening on the stove top and add the tea bags. ?Let steep 5 minutes, and remove the bags, gently squeezing all of the precious flavor from each small bag. ?Place shortening in the fridge to firm back up, then make icing per your standard recipe.

I know, it's not a recipe. ?You have your favorite icing recipe, use it. ?Use your favorite flavor of tea. ?It was delicious!

Alcatel-Lucent's latest lightRadio development aims to spread TD-LTE across China

AlcatelLucent's latest lightRadio development aims to spread TDLTE across China

We've yet to hear much about Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio since it's original introduction in early 2011, but here in Barcelona, the outfit has announced (in cooperation with China Mobile, no less) that its latest innovation could help spread the wondrous waves of TD-LTE across China. Available now for large-scale commercial deployment in China Mobile's first trial TD-LTE network, which spans 13 cities in China, lightRadio Metro Radio will bring legitimate 4G services to residents in densely populated areas of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao.

China Mobile itself has over 722 million subscribers, and a huge swath of those are no doubt clamoring for faster transmission speeds. In China, lightRadio Metro Radio will be deployed in bustling indoor and outdoor locations, such as shopping malls and stadiums, but there's no word on when the masses might expect this stuff to launch in earnest. Here's hoping for a speedy trial, eh?

Reusse: SW Minnesota State coach toughs it out on the court and off

This is Tim Miles' first season coaching the Nebraska men's basketball team. Recently, he had a speaking appearance in Omaha and was on the road back to Lincoln when he started a cellphone conversation with Brad Bigler.

"There were some things Brad's team was doing defensively that I wanted to ask him about,'' Miles said. "We got into the conversation and I missed Lincoln. It's not easy to miss Lincoln -- with eight exits -- in Nebraska, but I blew by it by about 20 miles.''

Miles' interest in breaking down defense with Bigler was intriguing for a few reasons: Tim is coaching in the Big Ten and Brad in Division II at Southwest Minnesota State. Tim was the Southwest coach from 1997 to 2001, and Brad was his point guard much of that time.

So, this was the mentor kicking around defensive concepts with the prot?g?.

"He's the son of a coach,'' Miles said. "His dad, Mark, is one of those solid-as-a-rock guys. When Brad talks about basketball, he traces everything back to his father.''

Mark Bigler coached his son at Fort Madison, a small town in southeastern Iowa. He is now the coach at Davenport West, one of the state's large schools.

Brad was recruited to Southwest State by Perry Ford. Before he got to Marshall, Minn., Ford left for Augustana (S.D.) and Miles was hired from Mayville (N.D.) State as his replacement.

"Brad was 5-foot-10 and maybe 140 pounds, but he played with as much resolve as anyone,'' Miles said. "What's the saying? 'Cool water runs deep.' That was him. No matter what situation we put in him, he always made plays.

"He had amazing strength as a person. And we've seen that through these tragedies.''

The tragedies have been chronicled nationally and regionally:

In July 2011, Brad, his mother, Diane Bigler-Hagenow, and three companions were kayaking on Hawk Creek near the Minnesota River. Diane was the enthusiastic kayaker, but the group ran into trouble with a rapids and she drowned.

On July 28, 2012, Brad's wife, Heather, was driving to the family cabin in Starbuck, with Brad in the passenger's seat, with their 5-month-old son, Drake, and Heather's mom in the back. The vehicle was smashed by a drunk driver and Drake died.

"I know it's tough every day for them, but not many of us could handle things like this the way Brad and his family have done," Miles said. "When you mention resiliency, Brad talks about what type of person his mother was, about what he still takes from his father, and now from Heather.''

Miles was on the phone late Saturday afternoon, after his Nebraska team had upset Iowa 64-60 in Lincoln. The fact a Big Ten coach would return a message after a big victory to talk about a former player and now a D-II coach ... that says something about these men.

Bigler and his Mustangs were in St. Paul playing Concordia on Friday night. Southwest held on for a 71-69 victory. The Mustangs then lost the regular-season finale Saturday night in Mankato, falling 85-75 to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular-season champion Minnesota State.

"The ratings came out and we were ninth in the region ... but we're fifth in the South Division,'' Bigler said. "This conference is so tough.''

The Mustangs finished with 16 assists against Concordia -- a tick above the season average. Assists are a go-to statistic for Bigler.

"We take pride in setting up teammates,'' he said. "If we have an offensive philosophy, that's it: move the ball, set up your teammates.''

Miles coached Southwest State to its best season, in 2000-01 -- earning a trip to the Division?II Elite Eight in Bakersfield, Calif. Bigler was a point guard. Miles left for North Dakota State and Greg Stemen took over as the coach.

Bigler was in his sixth year as an assistant in August 2009, when Stemen told his staff in confidence that he was about to take a job in business.

"I didn't even tell Heather,'' Bigler said. "She was pregnant and we were moving into a new home. I didn't want to give her more to worry about.''

On Sept. 30, 2009, Stemen resigned and Bigler became the interim coach. He was 30 ... and secured the job full-time when the Mustangs reached the 2010 NSIC title game.

Thirty years old seems young for a Division?II job?

"Maybe, but Brad was one of those guys,'' Miles said. "You knew he was going to be a coach, and he'd be good at it right away.''

Kantar: Android back on top of US smartphone share in January with Sprint's help

Kantar Android back on top of US smartphone market share with Sprint's help

Most US smartphone market share estimates last fall saw Apple retake the lead as it rode a wave of iPhone 5 sales. While there was always a question as to how long that trend would last, new data from Kantar Worldpanel supports beliefs that it was really more of a momentary pop. Android reportedly took back the lead at 49.4 percent of American sales between November and January, improving its overall position versus the same month last year. Not that everyone else was necessarily hurting -- iOS still had a 45.9 percent slice of the pie, and the continued Windows Phone 8 rollout took Microsoft up to 3.2 percent. The real wounds were dealt to a pre-transition BlackBerry and Nokia's outgoing Symbian.

We seldom get an explanation as to why such shifts take place, but the researchers suggest that a significant chunk of the January switch-up can be assigned to one carrier: Sprint. Its decision to cut the Galaxy S III's contract price to $99 supposedly helped Samsung's flagship climb from 14 percent of Sprint sales in October to 39 percent over the more recent 3-month span. The Galaxy S III didn't play as much of a role elsewhere, Kantar says. Sprint's average contract pricing for Android also dipped to $95 at the same time, helping Samsung alone get 60.3 percent of the network's business as customers snapped up bargains. Big Yellow only played a small part in the overall US market, as you'll see in the detailed charts after the break, but it may have been large enough to tip the balance in OS preferences at the start of 2013.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: P1 hybrid supercar, asteroid attack lasers and mosquito inoculators

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green tktktk

Coffee is what fuels us in the morning -- but it turns out that a cup of Joe can do much more than perk up sleepy office workers; this week a truck that runs entirely on coffee set a world record for the highest speed ever attained by a java-powered vehicle. That isn't the only green car news that broke this week -- with the Geneva Motor Show fast approaching, we've been keeping an ear to the ground for the latest from Switzerland. McLaren is set to officially unveil its 903-horsepower P1 hybrid supercar at the Geneva show, and Volkswagen will show off its new XL1 plug-in hybrid, which gets a whopping 261 miles to the gallon. Volvo, meanwhile, just launched the world's first car with external airbags to help protect pedestrians from serious injuries. But if you prefer bikes over cars, then you'll want to check out Bicycled Bikes, a unique set of bikes that are manufactured in Spain from upcycled car parts.

Heffernan: It's official -- Adam Goldberg rules Twitter

By Virginia Heffernan

This week the Academy Awards were officially renamed The Oscars. The rebranding suggests that Hollywood has, finally, lost some of the crippling status anxiety suggested by the creation of the pompously named ?Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.? The Oscars are at last like a J.D. who finally stops calling himself an attorney. He?s self-assured enough to be known as a lawyer.

It?s high time. The movie business is the granddaddy of American popular entertainment: It not only has a grown son?television?inflicted with status panic, but there?s also a teenage grandson?Internet video?to play enfant terrible.

That?s why I?m drawn, this Oscar season, to Vine. Vine is Twitter?s spellbinding new video app. We have no idea if it will convulse pop culture as the daguerreotype did in 1837, or the cinematograph in the 1890s. Or YouTube in 2005. Or Twitter in 2006. But the art Vine has engendered doesn?t look like pomp or bids for authority. It looks like actual art.

At the same time, Vine is only 4 weeks old. So we don?t know anything. But if, through chance, it does turn out to be a cultural convulsant, we know exactly who will be its Lumi?re brother and it's Ashton Kutcher, the early freestyler and medium-embracer who somehow instantly knows how to make hay of a new technology.

He?s Adam Goldberg. Recognize his name? If you are one of the ragtag few who currently Vine, you do?and maybe you have even noticed the hashtag #vinelikegoldberg. Goldberg is the maestro of the six-second looping Vine video; it is Goldberg?s dexterity and arid humor and trippy frisson to which we who use Vine aspire.

As Greg Boose put it in BlackBook magazine, ?Adam Goldberg somehow already owns Vine.?

But if you are not on Vine, meaning you?re every single person reading this except maybe seven, you may not remember Goldberg. Don?t bother with Wikipedia. All you need to know is that he played?with great skill?the Jewish dude in ?Saving Private Ryan,? a different Jewish dude in ?Dazed and Confused? and still another dude, also incidentally Jewish, in ?Entourage.?

Goldberg?s father is Jewish, and his mother is a lapsed Catholic. He doesn?t cotton to either faith, but that religious abstinence doesn?t protect him from what he told me is ?garden-variety anti-Semitism,? which haunts the popular response to his online work. He takes that, and most other things, in stride.

What Goldberg is is an artist. It?s serious. He?s normal about it and doesn?t act Austrian or entitled, but he?s not giving up, either. As an actor, he turns in well-reviewed performances in movies and TV nearly all the time, dutifully collecting a union paycheck, but on the side he spins out music, books, films, videos. He does various weird be-in projects, like someone in Berlin, or Yoko Ono.

When it comes to getting digitized, Goldberg, at 42, has an invaluable asset: a digital-native girlfriend. The highly pregnant Roxanne Daner, who appears often in Goldberg?s work, is a distinguished illustrator and keen digital designer. Like others in her adventurous, coastal cohort, Daner divides her time between apps barely out of beta and Victorian-era crafting. Her design-firm bio reads, ?I am a Waldorfian. I spend my free time felting, doing eurythmy and going to the dog park.?

Ten years younger than her boyfriend, Daner turned Goldberg on to the digital. ?My friends were curmudgeonly about the Web,? Goldberg told me. ?I was just not of the generation. It?s not as though I was the first person to jump on MySpace.?

Five years ago, Daner persuaded Goldberg to try Facebook, where he experimented in conceptual art. He put up a three-minute Warholian video of his legs on a rowing machine. All of his status updates were Dada. But he couldn?t get any traction.

?We kept trying to create this narrative,? Goldberg told me. He opened a Tumblr to this end, and it became his artist?s notebook. The narrative he and Daner were making came to involve surrealism, deadpan satire, dream sequences, groovy design, left-wing politics, and the ingenuous and quirky romance that defines Goldberg?s and Daner?s sweet interaction with each other.

Goldberg, who plays guitar and whose resonant, spiky way of talking has won him voice parts in animated movies, then put out two records. One was with a band he called The Goldberg Sisters. He used what he called ?a draggy voice? and sometimes screamed. The Goldberg Sisters were featured on ?The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.?

This might have been a big break, except that Goldberg was told he couldn?t mention a website?his Tumblr?on the show; he could only promote movies and CDs. Goldberg resigned himself, again, to producing Tumblr art for Tumblr art?s sake.?

Tumblr eventually ?became an exercise in OCD,? said Goldberg. ?I put an imposition on myself where I had to post a photo every other day and a recording every other day. That?s how I wrote my last record.?

So that?s where Goldberg was ??toiling in the nether regions of social networking, creating all sorts of stuff that nobody paid attention to??when someone his girlfriend knew told them about Vine, the app with a cool cutting feature that lets you make six-second repeating videos and share them on Twitter.

Something in Vine?s runic brevity, its looping broken-record feature and its temptation to jump cuts and stop motion, encouraged artsy projects from the start. And you couldn?t fuss too much or get too perfectionist. The Vines are posted to Vine?and Twitter and Facebook, if you choose?almost the second they?re done. I mean, they don?t have to be and you can delete them, but the technology, like Twitter itself, biases you toward publication and discourages video-hoarding.

The performance art Goldberg and Daner had been doing?singing, playing guitar and violin, acting, taking pictures, felting?perfectly suited the Vine. The first set of videos they made shows Goldberg as a speedy, addled Goldberg, developing a Vine obsession, but also cross-dressing and ventriloquizing and freaking out, while a concerned Daner and her friend Merritt look on.

Though Goldberg has said he saw horror potential in the app from the start, his early videos had comedy in them. More recently, he?s titrated out the humor entirely and put a conceptual acid-head kaleidoscope in its place. He?s hit his stride.

?I skipped my funny phase as a filmmaker,? he told me, explaining in part why he hasn?t gone the route of the Hollywood goofballs who like to chip off chuckly videos for "Funny or Die."

With the sheepishness known to anyone between 40 and 50 who unironically admits to liking art, Goldberg sighed. ?At the end of the day the things that turn me on are kind of aural-visual dream sequences,? he said.

Goldberg pioneered for Vine what he called a ?thumb-tapping technique? that makes the video stutter, where the audio seems to have a mind of its own. He also makes Vines that use other Vines and puts glass over his iPhone?s lens, and otherwise distorts the film so much that its looping and shortness start to seem like the least weird part of it.

Now that he?s put Polaroids of things reflected in mirrors in his Vines?the ancient mirror, the 20th-century Polaroid and the weeks-old Vine?Goldberg has developed new awe about the iPhone.

?The iPhone has a lens and a recording device and an input,? he told me by phone. ?You can do anything with a lens, a recording device and an input. I can?t believe we?re talking on the same device that I used to make the Vines.?

I looked at my iPhone. I put Goldberg on speakerphone for a little bit and listened to his rapid, happy voice.

?This is where things get exciting for me,? Goldberg said. And then he went to make another Vine.

Texas Longhorns second Junior Day recap

The Longhorns didn't pick up any commitments and didn't extend many offers, either.

The Texas Longhorns held their second Junior Day on Saturday, bringing a handful of top prospects into town, showing them the campus, and allowing them to watch a practice.

In the past, the second Junior Day didn't typically feature many offers offers, as most of the prospects in attendance were still under evaluation from the 'Horns. Other than some of the top prospects in attendance who already received their offers, that was the case again on Saturday.

Here's the breakdown on what went down on a commitment-less Junior Day for the 'Horns.

New offers out

Not counting Terrell Cuney, who may or may not have had an offer entering the event, the Longhorns extended new offers to four players at the event.

New Orleans St. Augustine cornerback Jermaine Roberts, a teammate of five-star running back Leonard Fournette. The 5-9, 175-pounder is a consensus four-star prospect and rated as the . An update from Taylor Hamm at Gigem247 teased that "Texas will be a player" for Roberts.

The cornerback came in with his teammate Joseph Paul, a consensus three-star prospect whose height (6-4) and weight (335 pounds) suggest a college future on the interior of the line. Paul has offers from Florida, Florida State, and Texas A&M, as well as one from the 'Horns, which may have been extended about 10 days ago.

An expected offer to an in-state safety went down as well -- former Clemson commit Dylan Sumner-Gardner, the highly-considered West Mesquite prospect, received his on Saturday, announcing it on his Twitter account moments after his coaches informed the services:

One of the relatively surprising visitors was Oklahoma commit Armanti Foreman, a dynamic slot receiver prospect from Texas City who made it in with his brother D'Onta, who is still looking for his first offer. It's not clear how much interest Foreman has in Texas, but he does have a committable offer now.

Here's what Foreman said about his commitment status:

The word choice of saying that he's with rolling with his pledge to the Sooners "right now" could be significant, as it leaves open the possibility that he could change his mind in the future. Or it could mean nothing.

The 'Horns also continued to target defensive ends in the class, a major need, by extending an offer to Abilene product Jake McMillon, a 6-3, 240-pound weakside prospect who currently holds offer from SMU and Texas State.

Three important visitors didn't make it

Every Junior Day, there are a handful of prospects who don't end up making it to campus, normally for a variety of reasons.

After missing the first Junior Day, Dallas Bishop Dunne offensive tackle Jovan Pruitt decided instead to attend a girls basketball game on Saturday. A strong offer candidate had he made it in, Pruitt will now probably have to visit at some other point this spring or summer to receive his offer.

The Longhorns are moving slowly on offensive linemen after securing the commitment from Demetrius Knox and offering Cuney, so the spot that would be available for Pruitt isn't likely to get filled up, he just needs to get to campus.

The higher-profile visitor who didn't end up making the trip is Louisiana product Leonard Fournette, who ended up having a track meet instead. The Longhorns already have two excellent ball-carriers committed in the class in Daniel Gresham of Fort Worth All Saints and Aldine Eisenhower's Donald Catalon, so Fournette would be a luxury take and the Longhorns considered a longshot even if he had made it to campus. If Fournette does take a trip to Austin at some point, the 'Horns may have a chance, but probably not a strong one even in that scenario.

Brenham cornerback Darrion Johnson had tweeted several days ago about attending, but had a family situation come up that kept him from doing so:

Kd Cannon makes it to town

One of the question marks heading into the event was whether the elite deep threat from Mount Pleasant would be able to make his way to Austin to see practice, an important first step in convincing him that the Texas offense is a good fit for his immense talent.

Cannon did indeed make it in after visiting Baylor late in the week, though his Twitter feed was rather quiet. He did tweet out this picture:

Parsing the Twitter feed of recruits on a Junior Day visit isn't always the best way to determine how much they liked it, but it seems worth pointing out that Cannon wasn't throwing his horns up in the picture and wasn't as effusive about his visit to Texas as he was about his trip to Waco, where he said that he was "having fun."

A big deal? Perhaps not, but what may be more significant is the fact that he now has pictures from that trip as his Twitter avatar and cover image. The Bears have been putting in major work with Cannon, perhaps more than the Longhorns, so the sense continues to be that Texas is working to make up ground with him.

If that happened on Saturday, it wasn't apparent from his comments on social media.

CJ Reese really wants to be a Longhorn

One of the longhots to receive an offer on Saturday is San Antonio Madison defensive lineman CJ Reese, who is still looking for his first offer and isn't ranked by 247Sports or the composite by the same service.

Reese shared his thoughts on the visit in the early afternoon:

He wasn't shy about sharing his feelings for Texas, either:

Reese plays all along the defensive line and may have the most upside at defensive tackle, but he's only 260 pounds right now, so it appears the Longhorns will remain in evaluation mode with him.

In some ways, the situation is very similar to what happened last spring with another Madison player, Vincent Taylor, the defensive tackle who ended up at Oklahoma State. Taylor never received the offer from Texas that he wanted so much.

The story may end up being different for Reese, but he may have to wait a while for it to happen, especially since the coaches know that they can probably land him whenever they want.

No offer for Alaka, either

Cy Falls linebacker Otaro Alaka is a rangy athlete at his position and a former teammate of 2013 signee Jacorey Warrick. He's also got an impressive offer list and is extremely high on Texas. High enough that he might have committed on the spot or in the next several days had he received an offer from the 'Horns during his visit.

However, the offer didn't happen, so Alaka will have to wait with his offers from schools like Arkansas, Cal, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech, an impressive list now after his recruitment has taken off in recent weeks.

GoHornsGo90 wasn't particularly happy about the 'Horns waiting on pulling the trigger with an offer for Alaka:

No commitment from Cuney, but it could be coming soon

It was rather difficult to tell if Jasper center Terrell Cuney actually had a Texas offer when he visited Austin for the Junior Day, but he definitely did when he left. The lean, mobile prospect hasn't been shy about expressing his fondness for the Longhorns and has called them his leader, a relatively rare decision these days for recruits at this point in the process -- if they have one, they typically prefer to keep it to themselves now.

Cuney was probably the most active prospect on Twitter sending out pictures with various Longhorn luminaries past and present and generally appearing to enjoy his time in Austin.

A commitment from Cuney didn't happen while at the event, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him shut down his recruitment in favor of the 'Horns in the near future.

Rhetorical question from Washington

The Longhorns extended an offer to Nederland defensive tackle DeShawn Washington during the middle of last week, so he didn't arrive in Austin wondering about if he would leave with an offer.

He also wondered out loud on Twitter, asking a rather rhetorical question:

Holding the Texas offer certainly enables that at some point.

The bigger story with Washington on the day was probably a picture from Instagram he posted on his Twitter feed as well, which showed him with Vince Young in the stadium. In the picture, Washington appears to be about 6-0 tall, but upon closer inspection, it seems that the 6-5 Young is standing on a bit of incline, which causes him to look taller than he is. Washington also measured in at over 6-2 at a recent Next Level event, so the concerns about his actual size were overblown for a moment, but not something to worry about moving forward.

Gresham flies in

Neither All Saints product was expected to make the second Junior Day, but Gresham decided to take matters into his own hands after his ride fell through, securing an airline ticket and flying from the Metroplex down to Austin to take in practice and help with the recruiting efforts.

You are a remnant of humanity who has been Saved by an advanced, space-faring civilization so that you can retake Earth from an alien menace descending from something known as the Great Enemy. You, along with thousands of other humans, survive in a small area called the Community. From here, you stage expeditions out into the wild of Earth to fend off alien creatures, retake land, and investigate the mysteries that followed these aliens from wherever they came from. You are, for lack of a better term, an Explorator.

Now then, this being an OOC thread, everyone can feel free to post and re-post their characters in here, as well as bring up any questions, suggestions, or issues relating to the RP. Talk it up with everyone else involved. Anything, just as long as it's reasonably related to the RP
Also, feel free to PM me at any time, and I will respond ASAP.

As for posting in the IC thread, I will also lay down some rules.

-Don't post multiple times in a row. Make sure most everyone else gets a chance to post again before you do.
-You can edit your posts if you want, as long as it won't affect something someone else has written after you too badly, and if you do edit your posts, make sure it's obvious to someone who may have read your original post. Signify with something like this: Post Edited
-If too many people are to join, I'd like the amount of posts you make per day to be limited to three. For now, we're all good. As long as there isn't clutter and everyone has their chances to react to the happenings, no limit.
-Don't Godmod. That's pretty standard. Basically, it means not to take control of someone else's character in your own post.
-Lastly, make your posts a decent length.

Business Security Is Very Important For Our Business | Jason ...

We have tested and designed some of the best products out there for use when travelling. Now we have an opportunity to provide the best in portable flagpoles, that can be used anywhere you can imagine. If you have bought a new house and want to install high security systems, then locksmiths can suggest you the right security system for your house. You can even find details about locksmiths available in your nearby area by conducting an online search on the Internet or from trusted references.

By surfing various sites and online portals on the Internet, you can collect useful information about each of these topics. In this way, you will get an idea about these topics and accordingly you can plan, which type of security system you want to install in your house. These professionals are trained and expert at making new keys, duplicate keys, etc. They can provide you guidance as to where the security systems should be placed in your home for increased security. If you want an affordable aluminum flagpole the wall thickness seems to be thin enough that if you are using the flagpole in high winds or gusts the flagpole will flex and bend just a little. However, aluminum is not like fiberglass, once it bends it tends to hold the distorted shape making the collapsing of the pole difficult at best when you are taking it down for storage.

With the locking flagpole that problem no longer exists. Now, there have been many questions asked of me about the aluminum flagpoles, ranging from questions of strength, portability, overall length when collapsed for storage or transport and many more questions dealing with cost and warranty. Plastic lockers will be a good helper in our office, lockable filing cabinet and security mail boxes are very important for business security.

Apple's Chinese Manufacturer Foxconn Introduces Nationwide Hiring Freeze

According to the Financial Times, the world?s biggest contract electronics manufacturer and one of Apple, Inc.?s main suppliers will suspend hiring new employees due to the lowered demand for Apple products. The last time Foxconn had a countrywide hiring freeze was in 2009, because the global financial crisis affected demand. Now, an independent recruiter in Shandong province said that Foxconn new hires are as low as they were during the 2009 economic crisis.

The recruitment freeze comes during the peak hiring season in China, after the Spring Festival holiday, and human resources officials at the company are saying they do not plan on hiring again until the end of March at the earliest.

Independent recruiters for a facility in Zhengzhou, Foxconn?s second largest factory, are seeing the drastic hiring changes take place. ?Last year at this time, the workers were busy all day and night and had to recruit more than 4,000 new people,? a staff member of a local employment center said to Chinese business paper First Financial Daily. Now, recruiters are not seeing any job listings from the electronic manufacturer. ?

Liu Kun, a spokesperson at one of Foxconn?s largest facilities, a factory located in the southern city of Shenzhen that currently has more than 200,000 workers, told the Financial Times that ?currently, none of the plants in mainland China have hiring plans.? Though some factories will be hiring some technicians, workers on production lines for the iPhone and iPad are not needed. Both of Foxconn?s biggest plants and iPhone suppliers in China in Shenzhen and Zhengzhou, each with roughly 200,000 employees, are all putting a freeze on hiring.

Another factory in Taiyuan, which has an estimated 79,000 employees, has seen significantly fewer employees after the holiday season. According to the Global Times, this year, a significant portion of migrant workers did not return to their factory jobs because they were able to find work in their hometowns. Foxconn?s hiring freeze will not replace the jobs that have been vacated, reducing a significant part of the workforce.?

The slowed production is a direct effect of the disappointing iPhone 5 sales in China at the end of last year.?

?Apple?s flagship store in Beijing?s upscale Sanlitun shopping district began selling the iPhone 5 for the first time on Friday in what was arguably the least eventful launch of an Apple device in the company?s four-year history in the Chinese capital,? the Wall Street Journal reported.

But other reports are suggesting that the hiring freeze is also in part due to a shift in mechanical production lines at Foxconn factories. China?s online news site NetEase.com said that insider sources say that in addition to adjusting production lines, the hiring freeze will also allow for more mechanized production to occur.

?This also indicates that Foxconn is preparing to rebalance the distribution of manual line production with mechanical production,? the NetEase report said.

In the past Foxconn has endured many labor-related woes as international media, labor rights groups and the general public all criticized the company for intolerable work conditions. And though Foxconn has made efforts to improve work-life balance, hours, compensation and benefits, a shift toward mechanized production could help prevent future labor-related scandals.?

Google Reported Planning Touchscreen Laptops

Google has developed the first touchscreen laptops powered by its Chrome OS to be sold later this year, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing ?people familiar with the matter,? as it tries to challenge Microsoft?s?Windows system.

Oddly, the Chrome devices also would compete with those powered by Google's other operating system, Android, which has swept the smartphone and tablet market, making Google a force in mobile-device software.

Both Chrome and Android spring from Linux, an open-source operating system, and Google has said it is comfortable with competing systems that help boost key services like its Web-search engine and YouTube.

It's unclear when the Chrome touchscreen laptops will go on sale and what hardware manufacturer is working with Google to build them. A Google spokeswoman declined comment to the Journal.

Samsung has been among the manufacturers building Chrome laptops. Google sold nearly 100,000 $199 and $249 Chromebooks in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of last year.

Spidey-sense suit tingles when someone gets too close

FOR Peter Parker, it was a tingling sensation that alerted him to an imminent threat. Now anyone can pretend to be Spider-Man by simply donning a suit that lets you feel how close you are to a nearby object. It can even let the wearer navigate with their eyes closed.

The suit, called SpiderSense and built by Victor Mateevitsi of the University of Illinois in Chicago has small robotic arms packaged in modules with microphones that send out and pick up ultrasonic reflections from objects. When the ultrasound detects someone moving closer to the microphone, the arms respond by exerting a growing pressure on the body. Seven of these modules are distributed across the suit to give the wearer as near to 360 degree ultrasound coverage as possible.

"When someone is punching Spider-Man, he feels the sensation and can avoid it. Our suit is the same concept," says Mateevitsi. SpiderSense could help blind people to find their way more easily, he says.

Mateevitsi tested the suit out on students, getting them to stand outside on campus, blindfolded, and "feel" for approaching attackers. Each wearer had ninja cardboard throwing stars to use whenever they sensed someone approaching them. "Ninety five per cent of the time they were able to sense someone approaching and throw the star at them," says Mateevitsi.

"I'm very excited about this," says Gershon Dublon of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who also works on augmenting parts of the human body. Mateevitsi's work is a step on the road to giving humans truly integrated extrasensory perception, says Dublon.

Mateevitsi wants to use the suit, or just a few sensors on the arms and back, to boost cyclists' awareness of other traffic on the road. SpiderSense is due to be presented at the Augmented Human conference in Stuttgart, Germany, in March. The team now plans to add more sensors to the suit to increase its resolution.

"We humans have the senses that we are born with and we can't extend them," Mateevisti says. "But there are some threats which are very deadly, but we can't sense them, like radiation. Electronic sensors can feel those threats."

The team also plans to begin trials of SpiderSense with visually impaired people.

Pistorius charged with murdering girlfriend

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? Olympian Oscar Pistorius fired into the door of a small bathroom where his girlfriend was cowering after a shouting match on Valentine's Day, hitting her three times, a South African prosecutor said Tuesday as he charged the sports icon with premeditated murder.

The magistrate ruled that Pistorius faces the harshest bail requirements available in South African law. He did not elaborate before a break was called in the session.

Pistorius sobbed softly as his lawyer insisted that Reeva Steenkamp's shooting was an accident.

"She couldn't go anywhere. You can run nowhere," prosecutor Gerrie Nel said at a bail hearing.

The shooting death has shocked South Africans and many around the world who idolized Pistorius for overcoming adversity to become a sports champion, competing in the London Olympics last year in track besides being a Paralympian. Steenkamp, 29, was a model and law graduate who made her debut on a South African reality TV program that was broadcast on Saturday, two days after her death.

Nel said the couple had had a shouting match and Steenkamp fled to the bathroom, down a seven-meter (yard) passage from the bedroom, and locked herself in. He said the 26-year-old Pistorius got up from bed and had to put on his prosthetic legs to reach the toilet door.

Nel told the court the door was broken open after the shots were fired. Pistorius' lawyer insisted there was no evidence to substantiate a murder charge.

"Was it to kill her, or was it to get her out?" defense attorney Barry Roux asked the court, referring to the broken-down door. "We submit it is not even murder. There is no concession this is a murder."

Pistorius, who had appeared grim and solemn at the start of the hearing, broke down and sobbed softly with his head in his hands as his lawyer argued that it was an accidental shooting. It occurred in the early hours of Feb. 14. Neighbors had heard a loud argument and then gunshots, police have said. The couple had been dating for only about three months.

As details emerged at the dramatic court hearing in the capital, Steenkamp's body was being cremated Tuesday at a memorial service in the south-coast port city of Port Elizabeth. The family said members had arrived from around the world. Six pallbearers carried her coffin, draped with a white cloth and covered in white flowers, into the church for the private service.

June Steenkamp, the mother, said the family wants answers.

"Why? Why my little girl? Why did this happen? Why did he do this?" she said in an interview published Monday in The Times newspaper.

Outside the court, several dozen singing women protested against domestic violence and waved placards urging Pistorius be refused bail. "Pistorius must rot in jail," one placard said.

South Africa has some of the world's worst rates of violence against females and the highest rate in the world of women killed by an intimate partner, according to a study by the Medical Research Council. Another council study estimates a child or woman is raped every four minutes. While homicide rates have dropped, the number of women killed by current or former partners has increased, said the council's Professor Rachel Jewkes. At least three women are killed by a partner every day in the country of 50 million, she said.

Steenkamp campaigned actively against domestic violence and had tweeted on Twitter that she planned to join a "Black Friday" protest by wearing black in honor of a 17-year-old girl who was gang-raped and mutilated two weeks ago.

What "she stood for, and the abuse against women, unfortunately it's gone right around and I think the Lord knows that statement is more powerful now," her uncle and the family spokesman Mike Steenkamp said after her memorial.

He said the family had planned a big get-together at Christmas but that had not been possible. "But we are here today as a family and the only one who's missing is Reeva," he said, breaking down and weeping.

At the court, Nel said the killing was premeditated because Pistorius had planned to say that he thought he was shooting an intruder, and had told that story to his sister, Aimee.

"It was all part of the preplanning. Why would a burglar lock himself inside the bathroom?" Nel asked. The shooting happened at Pistorius' home in a guarded and gated community in a luxury suburb of Pretoria.

Roux, in arguing that Pistorius should be freed on bail, he said there were no other charges outstanding against the double-amputee who last year became the first double-amputee track athlete to run at the Olympics.

Legal experts say it could take months for the case to be tried.

Pistorius, in a gray suit and tie, nodded after the chief magistrate asked if he was well. And he nodded his appreciation when his brother, Carl, pressed his shoulder in support. Journalists jammed into the courtroom, which was full with almost 100 people, including Pistorius' father, Henke, and sister Aimee.

In an email to The Associated Press on Monday, Pistorius' longtime track coach ? who was yet to comment ? said he believes the killing was an accident.

"I pray that we can all, in time, come through this challenging situation following the accident and I am looking forward to the day I can get my boy back on the track," Ampie Louw wrote in his statement. "I am still in shock following the heart-breaking events that occurred last week and my thoughts and prayers are with both of the families involved."

It's not just amyloid: White matter hyperintensities and Alzheimer's disease

Feb. 19, 2013 ? New findings by Columbia researchers suggest that along with amyloid deposits, white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) may be a second necessary factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Most current approaches to Alzheimer's disease focus on the accumulation of amyloid plaque in the brain. The researchers at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, led by Adam M. Brickman, PhD, assistant professor of neuropsychology, examined the additional contribution of small-vessel cerebrovascular disease, which they visualized as white matter hyperintensities (WMHs).

The study included 20 subjects with clinically defined Alzheimer's disease, 59 subjects with mild cognitive impairment, and 21 normal control subjects. Using data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative public database, the researchers found that amyloid and WHMs were equally associated with an Alzheimer's diagnosis. Amyloid and WMHs were also equally predictive of which subjects with mildcognitive impairment would go on to develop Alzheimer's. Among those with significant amyloid, WMHs were more prevalent in those with Alzheimer's than in normal control subjects.

Because the risk factors for WMHs -- which are mainly vascular -- can be controlled, the findings suggest potential ways to prevent the development of Alzheimer's in those with amyloid deposits.

"White Matter Hyperintensities and Cerebral Amyloidosis" was published online February 19 in JAMA Neurology.

Washington House panel hears bill to tax medical marijuana sales

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A House committee held a public hearing Monday on a measure to tax medical marijuana dispensaries, an effort to undermine any black market when sale of state-taxed recreational marijuana starts at the end of this year.

The measure would hit dispensaries with a tax equal to 25 percent of their sales of cannabis and cannabis-infused products.

The bill sponsors have said they're trying to avoid a dual market - one taxed, one not - as the state moves toward creating a regulated system for the fledgling marijuana industry created by Initiative 502.

In November, voters approved the initiative that allows adults over age 21 to have up to an ounce of pot. The state is due to start issuing licenses to marijuana growers, processors and retail stores, with the marijuana taxed 25 percent at each stage.

The state Liquor Control Board is in the process of developing rules for the new industry, possibly including such measures as digital tracking of inventory to prevent diversion to the black market. Sales are set to begin late this year.

The bill is one of several marijuana-related measures pending in Olympia. One would allow anyone with a misdemeanor pot conviction to have their record cleared and another would protect medical marijuana patients from arrest.

Medical patients could still grow their own 15 plants or designate someone else to grow for them, and true community gardens of up to 45 plants and 10 patients would still be allowed.

Prescription medications aren't taxed in Washington, and those in the medical marijuana community have argued that because medical marijuana requires a doctor's authorization, it should fall into that category.

New Zealand to Keep Troops in Afghanistan

News - Afghanistan

Monday, 18 February 2013 12:27 Last Updated on Monday, 18 February 2013 13:02 Written by TOLOnews.com

alt

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the country will keep a small team of military personnel in Afghanistan to help coalition forces after it formally withdraws from the country in April.

Key on Monday said the country remains committed to international efforts to improve the security and prosperity of Afghanistan.

A group of 27 including three elite special-forces troops will be primarily based in Kabul undertaking planning and intelligence duties.

The initial commitment will be for one year until April 2014.

Last year, the New Zealand announced it was withdrawing from the country in April 2013, five months earlier than previously planned.

The country has stationed about 145 soldiers in central Bamiyan province since 2003. Ten New Zealand soldiers have died in the Afghan war.

Burger King sold to McDonald's? No, just hacked

As if it isn't embarrassing enough for a company to have its official Twitter account compromised, sometimes hackers like to add insult to injury. On Monday, a post on the official (and verified) Twitter account for Burger King declared that the fast-food chain "just got sold to McDonalds!"

The Twitter account was renamed "McDonalds" and the profile image was changed to the iconic golden arches. The account description? "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped ..." After the "announcement," a stream of tweets and retweets followed, making light of the situation. Based on retweets between @YourAnonNews, a Twitter account associated with Anonymous, and the compromised @BurgerKing account, it appears as if the hacktivist group is behind the hack.

Twitter suspended the account about an hour after the first compromised tweet.

We reached out to Twitter and Burger King for an explanation as to what efforts are being made to reinstate Burger King's control of the Twitter account. A Twitter spokesperson responded with a standard explanation that the social network doesn't "comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons."

"This incident has nothing to do with us," a McDonald's spokesperson told NBC News, dismissing the question of an acquisition (and making plain that it wasn't to blame for the social media mess, either). "We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking," a tweet laterposted through the official McDonald's Twitter account further emphasized.

No matter. The Internet's getting a kick out of the whole incident. "The fact that @BurgerKing got hacked and turned into a @McDonalds feed is pretty funny," one Twitter user wrote. "Never know what is going to happen in social media."

"Somebody needs to tell Burger King that 'whopper123' isn't a secure password," another quipped.

A social media specialist for Wendy's, Amy Rose Brown, tweeted (on her personal account), that her "real life nightmare is playing out over on @BurgerKing."

It's not all bad news for Burger King, though. As toy review site OAFE tweeted: "They may be hacked, but when was the last time ANYBODY talked about @BurgerKing this much?" Indeed, the Twitter account gained some 30,000 new followers before the account suspension.

Marco Rubio Is Taking a Spring Trip to Israel (Sound Familiar?)

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Michael Jordan never played against LeBron James but that has not stopped the two from going one-on-one over how to determine greatness on the basketball court. Jordan, widely hailed as the best player of all-time and who turns 50 on Sunday, believes it is all about championship rings, while James, 28, thinks that view is a little too simplistic. The debate has been the chief talking point of reporters and players in the run-up to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) All-Star game in Houston on Sunday. ...

Officials: Iran commander killed by rebels in Syria

Saeed Kariminejad / Fars News Agency via AP

Iranian mourners carry the flag-draped coffin of Hessam Khoshnevis, identified in some reports as Gen. Hassan Shateri, in Tehran on Thursday. He was killed this week while traveling from Syria to Lebanon.

By Dominic Evans and Mariam Karouny, Reuters

An Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander has been killed inside Syria by rebels battling Iran's close ally President Bashar Assad, Iranian officials and a rebel leader said on Thursday.

Syrian rebels have repeatedly accused Tehran of sending fighters to help Assad crush the 22-month-old uprising, a charge Iran has denied.

The Iranian embassy in Lebanon said the dead man, Hessam Khoshnevis, was in charge of Tehran's reconstruction assistance in Lebanon. It said he was killed by "armed terrorist groups," a label used by the Syrian government to describe Assad's foes, on the road to Lebanon as he returned from Damascus.

A Syrian opposition commander said the attack was carried out by rebel fighters near the Syrian town of Zabadani, close to the Lebanese border.

/

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

Iran has strongly backed Assad during the uprising in which the United Nations says nearly 70,000 people have been killed. In September Iran's Revolutionary Guard commander in chief said the force was providing non-military support in Syria and may get involved militarily if there is foreign intervention.

Last year Syrian rebels kidnapped 48 Iranians who they said were Revolutionary Guard fighters, and authorities in Tehran described as pilgrims. They released them this year in a prisoner swap with Syrian authorities.

Details of Khoshnevis's killing, which Iranian news agencies said happened on Tuesday, were sketchy, and Iran's envoy to Beirut drew a link with Israel.

"He served the oppressed, supporting the resistance to Israel," the ambassador, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, told reporters as he received condolences from senior Lebanese officials.?

In Tehran, a funeral service held for Khoshnevis on Thursday was attended by senior Revolutionary Guard commanders, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Tehran's IRNA news agency said Khoshnevis, identified in some reports as Cmdr. Hassan Shateri, was a military engineer during the 1980-88 conflict between Iran and Iraq, and later operated in Afghanistan.

But officials stressed Khoshnevis was engaged in civilian reconstruction in Lebanon for the last seven years and Lebanon's Al-Safir newspaper said he had been in Syria to study reconstruction plans for the northern city of Aleppo.

Whole districts of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, and other urban centers across the country, have been destroyed in months of entrenched urban warfare. Assad has used airstrikes and artillery to push back rebels, who have become increasingly well armed as the conflict approaches its third year.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard public relations office said Khoshnevis would be buried in his hometown of Semnan after being "martyred on his way from Damascus to Beirut by mercenaries."
