J.Lo: Marc Anthony will 'always be in my life'

By Randee Dawn

Watch out what you ask Jennifer Lopez in an interview: You might be threatened with violence!

That's what TODAY's Matt Lauer discovered on Monday, when he brought up some quotes from a Vanity Fair article about Lopez's split with husband Marc Anthony.

"Matt, I want to kill you right now!" the "American Idol" judge said, adding that she and Anthony have agreed to not talk about their split publicly beyond that article.?

She also said they've remained in touch because of their children (twins Max and Emme) and a "passion project" in "Q'Viva! The Chosen,"? a reality TV talent show wherein the pair travels around Latin America in search of new acts to bring to the worldwide stage. They simply have to remain civil, she said: "Marc and I were friends before we got married. We were friends for years. And we always loved each other, and we always worked together.... Obviously, we have children together so it's not like he's not going to be in my life, he's always going to be in my life."

That said, Lopez admitted they have difficult moments. "We're human. I'm not going to sit here and lie to you about it. But at the end of the day there is real love there, and there is a family there and that comes first. And at the end of the day we also really love this project. It has its difficult moments once in a while when we're together, just because of the same things as when we were married."

So will she ever marry again? It's too soon to say.

"I don't know," Lopez said. "We'll see.... It's not time to think about that, do you know what I mean? It's still fresh."

Check out the video above for the entire interview, and tune in to Univision Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET to see "Q'Viva! The Chosen."

Are you surprised to learn Lopez and Anthony are still able to work so well together? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Santorum: Daughter with pneumonia recovering (AP)

BOCA RATON, Fla. ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Sunday his daughter Bella remains in the hospital with pneumonia but is recovering after a rough 36 hours.

Santorum spoke with Florida supporters by telephone from 3-year-old Bella's hospital room and said doctors hope she can go home in the next few days.

The former Pennsylvania senator also said, "We're going to get out on the campaign trail later tomorrow ... heading out to the Midwest, and start campaigning in the next states as we move this campaign forward."

Santorum scheduled a speech Monday in Missouri and another event in southwest Minnesota ? two states with early February contests. He then planned to head to Colorado and Nevada for events Tuesday.

"I feel very, very good about where we are and where the campaign is going," the candidate said.

But during the call with Florida voters, Santorum opened his remarks with his daughter, who has a genetic condition known as Trisomy 18. The condition typically proves fatal and Santorum often says his daughter wasn't expected to live past 12 months.

"She without a doubt has turned the corner," he said. But he cautioned she "isn't out of the woods yet."

Santorum called his daughter's improvement a "miraculous turnaround" after an unexpected detour from the campaign just days before Tuesday's Florida primary.

Santorum got to his home in Virginia around midnight Friday for a quick break to do his taxes, but found his daughter "was not doing well."

"I was up with her a lot of the night," he said. "By the end of the day, it was really, really clear she was struggling."

Saturday evening, Santorum aides announced Bella had been admitted to the hospital and they canceled his morning interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" and church services in Miami. His aides later canceled his trip to Florida and instead sent his 20-year-old daughter to campaign for him.

Santorum described the situation as a "very, very tough night last night" but said by late Sunday Bella was "alert and back to her own beautiful, happy girl."

"It's been a very hectic 36 hours," Santorum said. "Life in the Santorum family has dramatically improved since the late afternoon."

Florida highway pileup kills at least 10 people (AP)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? A long line of cars and trucks collided one after another early Sunday on a dark Florida highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were instantly blinded. At least 10 people were killed.

When rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans because the poor visibility made it difficult to find victims in wreckage that was strewn for nearly a mile, police said.

Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the pileup south of Gainesville on Interstate 75, which had been closed for a time before the accidents because of the mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire that may have been intentionally set. At least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers were involved, and some burst into flames.

Steven R. Camps of Gainesville said he and some friends were driving home several hours before dawn when they were drawn into the pileup.

"You could hear cars hitting each other. People were crying. People were screaming. It was crazy," he said. "If I could give you an idea of what it looked like, I would say it looked like the end of the world."

Photographs of the scene taken hours later revealed an aftermath that resembled a Hollywood disaster movie. Twisted, burned-out vehicles were scattered across the pavement, with smoke still rising from the wreckage.

Cars appeared to have smashed into the big rigs and, in one case, a motor home. Some cars were crushed beneath the heavier trucks.

Reporters who were allowed to view the site saw bodies still inside a burned-out Grand Prix. One tractor-trailer was burned down to its skeleton, charred pages of books and magazines in its cargo area. And the tires of every vehicle had burned away, leaving only steel belts.

Before Camps hit the fog bank, a friend who was driving ahead of him in a separate vehicle called to warn of the road conditions. The friend said he had just seen an accident and warned Camps to be careful as he approached the Paynes Prairie area just south of Gainesville.

A short time later, Camps said, traffic stopped along the northbound lanes.

"You couldn't see anything. People were pulling off the road," he said.

Camps said he began talking about the road conditions to a man in the car stopped next to them when another vehicle hit the man's car.

The man's vehicle was crushed under a semi-truck stopped in front of them. Camps said his car was hit twice, but he and another friend were able to jump out. They took cover in the grass on the shoulder of the road.

All around them, cars and trucks were on fire, and they could hear explosions as the vehicles burned.

"It was happening on both sides of the road, so there was nowhere to go. It blew my mind," he said, explaining that the scene "looked like someone was picking up cars and throwing them."

Authorities had not released the names of victims Sunday evening, but said one passenger car had four fatalities and a "tour bus-like" vehicle also was involved in the pileup.

At least 18 people were taken to a hospital.

All six lanes of the interstate ? which runs virtually the entire length of Florida ? were closed most of Sunday afternoon as investigators surveyed the site and firefighters put out the last of the flames.

The northbound lanes of I-75 were reopened around 5:30 p.m. EST, but the southbound lanes remained closed.

"Our standard operating procedure is to get the road open as quickly as possible but let's not forget we have 10 people who are not with us today," said Lt. Patrick Riordan, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman. "So we are going to take our time assessing the situation."

It was not clear when the highway would fully reopen because part of the road melted, police said.

At some point before the pileup, police briefly closed the highway because of the fog and smoke. The road was reopened when visibility improved.

Riordan said he was not sure how much time passed between the reopening of the highway and the first crash.

Traffic was being diverted much of Sunday onto U.S. 301 and State Road 27, Riordan said.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Forest Service, Ludie Bond, said the fire began Saturday, and investigators were trying to determine whether the blaze had been intentionally set. She said there were no controlled burns in the area and no lightning.

Bond also said the fire had burned 62 acres and was contained but still burning Sunday. A similar fire nearby has been burning since mid-November because the dried vegetation is so thick and deep. No homes are threatened.

Four years ago, heavy fog and smoke were blamed for another serious crash.

In January 2008, four people were killed and 38 injured in a series of similar crashes on Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa, about 125 miles south of Sunday's crash. More than 70 vehicles were involved in those crashes, including one pileup that involved 40 vehicles.

96% The Muppets

All Critics (171) | Top Critics (40) | Fresh (164) | Rotten (6)

It may not entirely work as a movie, but The Muppets shines as a piece of touching pop nostalgia.

The purity of the nostalgia turns this franchise film into a love letter to childhood.

You can rest easy - if you have previously loved the Muppets, you will likely currently love The Muppets.

The chorus of one of the songs declares, 'I've got everything that I need, right in front of me.' For 120 minutes, that's precisely how I felt.

[Filmmakers] hew close to the essential innocence informing the Muppets' silliness.

The Muppets is a triumph of simplicity, innocence and goofy jokes. It's a triumph of felt.

settle down for something wondrous, and wondrously artificial - an hour and a half of proof that the Dream Factory can still squeeze out more than one happy song to sing along.

So genial, so joyous, and suffused with such a lip-smacking sweetness, that the occasional pacing issues and subplot hiccups simply don't seem to matter.

It's never cloying or too knowing. Cynicism and wariness are real world concerns that have no place among the foam and felt.

Brushing aside decades of nostalgia, this is a whip-smart postmodern romp with a warm heart to boot, and as such, it should please both life-long fans and new initiates to the Muppet universe.

invites viewers to become a bit like the dreamer Walter and, in (re)discovering and embracing their inner child (not to mention their inner muppet), to join a fantastic, funny family that never grows old, no matter how times may have changed.

The innocence is slightly twisted, the harmonious camaraderie is slightly corrosive and the characters are slightly eccentric

I smiled throughout this madcap joyous adventure in which the Muppets are funny, silly, colourful and totally endearing in what must be the happiest film of the New Year

MY inner child - the one who loved The Muppet Show, The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper - really wants to give this film five stars.

By focusing on the Muppets of The Muppet Show (1976-1981) rather than the independent Muppets of prior films, the writers open up an unexplored aspect of Muppet lore ripe for revival.

A nice throwback to the good old days of the Muppets.

Under James Bobin's direction, however, the outing feels cheap and strangely small-screen.

An altogether charming, smart and strangely moving little movie.

The Muppets may be one of the best films of the year, not judged as a children's film, or a family film, but instead, simply as a film.

The Muppets is really two movies. And one of those movies is quite good, albeit awfully similar to previous films.

Even balcony critics Waldorf and Statler would have a hard time faulting this Wonkaful delight.

I am a fan of The Muppets and I'm glad to see them making a comeback. Maybe if this movie is a hit, they'll make a sequel where they'll actually get to be the stars of their own film.

A good imitation of the Muppet style.

The Muppets is a celebration of all things Muppets -- filled with fun, laughter and moments of pure joy.

The Muppets heralds the return of Jim Henson's beloved furry creations, resurrected from pop-culture irrelevance and lovingly restored to their former greatness in a vibrant comedy-musical.

Ex-Palm chief leaves HP after WebOS move (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Jon Rubinstein, who was instrumental in crafting Apple Inc's iPod music player, has left Hewlett Packard Co after two years on the job there.

Rubinstein was CEO of smartphone maker Palm when that company was acquired by HP in 2010. He last held a product-innovation role within HP's Personal Systems Group headed by Todd Bradley.

"Jon has fulfilled his commitment to HP," a HP spokesman said.

Rubinstein is still a board member at e-commerce company Amazon.com.

Last year HP, the largest U.S. technology company by revenue, announced it was halting its TouchPad line of tablets and any other devices based on WebOS, the mobile software it acquired when it bought Palm.

In December, HP said it would open its WebOS mobile operating system to developers and companies, potentially taking on Google Inc's free Android platform.

Newt Gingrich on Mitt Romney: He Thinks We're All Stupid!

The Florida Republican primary is less than a week away and the gloves are off.

Having been whomped in South Carolina, Mitt Romney came out firing in Monday night's Florida debate and has kept up the pressure on his GOP rival all week.

New pro-Romney ads are calling Gingrich a liar who's exaggerating loose ties to Ronald Reagan and drops names instead of touting his own policy credentials.

Newt lashed out at Mitt today for questioning his conservative values. Watch:

"This is the man who stood up the other night to question my credentials as a Reaganite? This is the kind of gall they have to think we are so stupid, and we are so timid," Gingrich said at an outdoor campaign event in Orlando, Florida.

Newt has slipped a bit in recent polls since his demonstrative win. Can he shift the momentum back his way when the candidates debate again tonight?

Repeated drought in east Africa may prompt aid rethink

RAINFALL patterns over east Africa have changed in a way that makes severe droughts more likely - and this means aid agencies need to rethink the way they operate.

Change is already on the cards for the aid response to drought and famine in east Africa. The region, which is racked by poverty, experienced its worst drought for 60 years in 2010 and 2011. A report released last week by Oxfam and Save the Children argued that the international relief effort was far too slow to get going, leading to thousands of avoidable deaths. Despite warnings that a drought was likely, many donors refused to act until the crisis received widespread media attention.

Not only would gradual stockpiling of supplies have saved more lives, it would have made economic sense too. "If we don't get the resources until people are starving it costs [relief agencies] more," says Challiss McDonough, the UN World Food Programme's senior spokeswoman for the region.

Even stockpiling may not be enough to prevent future famines if ongoing research concludes that severe droughts in the region are becoming more likely.

Last year's drought occurred because both of the region's rainy seasons failed. We already know that the trigger for the failure of the "short rains", between October and December 2010, was La Ni?a - a cyclical meteorological event caused by a pulse of cool water rising to the surface of the eastern Pacific Ocean. But efforts to work out why the "long rains" that occur between March and May fail have drawn a blank - until now.

Bradfield Lyon and David DeWitt of Columbia University in New York examined records of the long rains and found that they have been much more likely to fail since 1999. That year also marked a sharp rise in sea-surface temperatures in the western tropical Pacific Ocean, while further east the ocean cooled.

Lyon thinks this change in temperatures has altered atmospheric circulation patterns, cutting off the supply of moisture to east Africa (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI: 10.1029/2011GL050337). A 2010 report by the United States Geological Survey suggested a similar mechanism.

"This does not bode well for the long rains," Lyon says. "While other factors can influence the outcome during any given rainy season, this slowly varying 'background' favours lacklustre long rains."

The crucial question now is whether the temperature changes in the Pacific reflect a natural variability in the climate that might reset itself in a few years or whether the shift to weaker long rains is a permanent result of human-induced climate change.

The answer may come later this year when researchers at the UK Met Office complete an attribution study on the 2011 drought. They are running two sets of climate models, one with and one without the effects of humanity's greenhouse gas emissions, to see whether drought in east Africa becomes more likely in a warming world.

If it turns out climate change is making extreme weather events more likely, it is important to help locals build resilience, for instance by building irrigation systems to cope with drought, says Grainne Moloney, a chief technical adviser with FAO Somalia, a division of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization.

At the moment such efforts are hampered by the way aid money is managed, says Moloney. There are separate funds for short-term and long-term aid, often run by different organisations. "There has always been a distinction between emergency people and development people," she says. That means the response to immediate crises, while it saves lives, never addresses the underlying problems. "That's why we're in this mess."

The two sorts of aid need to be integrated, Moloney says, if tragedy is to be avoided.

USDA sets guidelines for healthier school meals (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? School meals for millions of children will be healthier under obesity-fighting U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards unveiled on Wednesday that double the amount of fruits and vegetables in cafeteria lunches - but won't pull French fries from the menu.

In the first major changes to school meals in more than 15 years, the new USDA guidelines will affect nearly 32 million children who eat at school. They will cost about $3.2 billion to implement over the next five years.

"Improving the quality of the school meals is a critical step to building a healthy future for our kids," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement.

The new meal requirements are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by first lady Michelle Obama. President Barack Obama approved the measure in late 2010.

The guidelines double the amounts of fruits and vegetables in school lunches and boost offerings of whole grain-rich foods. The new standards set maximums for calories and cut sodium and trans fat, a contributor to high cholesterol levels.

Schools may offer only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties and must assure that children are getting proper portion sizes, the USDA said.

The new standards will be largely phased in over a three-year period, starting in the 2012-13 school year.

About 17 percent of U.S. children and teenagers are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one-third of U.S. adults are obese.

FRIES WITH THAT?

Lawmakers altered the guidelines in November. They barred the USDA from limiting French fries and ensured that pizza counted as a vegetable because of its tomato paste.

Trade associations representing frozen pizza sellers like ConAgra Foods Inc and Schwan Food Co as well as French fry sellers McCain Foods Ltd and J.R. Simplot Co were instrumental in blocking changes to rules affecting those items.

Margo Wootan, nutrition policy director for the non-profit Center For Science in the Public Interest, said that the new standards were a big improvement despite food industry lobbying and the congressional revamp.

"The new school meal standards are one of the most important advances in nutrition in decades," she said in a statement.

The Environmental Working Group said the changes could pack a financial punch since they may help reduce medical bills related to diabetes and other obesity-related chronic diseases.

"A healthier population will save billions of dollars in future health care costs," said Dawn Undurraga, EWG's staff nutritionist.

As an example of a new meal, the USDA said an elementary school lunch could be whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce and a whole wheat roll, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi, low-fat milk, low-fat ranch dip and soft margarine.

That lunch would replace a meal of a hot dog on a bun with ketchup, canned pears, raw celery and carrots with ranch dressing, and low-fat chocolate milk.

As part of the new standards, schools will receive another 6 cents a meal. The USDA also will increase the number of inspections of school menus.

Food and beverages sold in vending machines and other school sites "will also contribute to a healthy diet," the USDA statement said.

The USDA gives school districts funds for meals through its National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.

Magnitude 5.3 quake off Greek islands, no injuries (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greek authorities say an earthquake with preliminary 5.3-magnitude has shaken the southern Aegean Sea islands, but no injuries or damage have been reported.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says the undersea earthquake occurred Thursday between the popular tourist resort islands of Santorini and Crete, some 244 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of Athens.

Greece is in one of the world's seismically active areas. Out of the hundreds of quakes that occur every year, very few cause injuries or damage, although a strong earthquake on the outskirts of Athens in 1999 killed 143 people.

Ind. House Dems return in right-to-work battle (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana Democrats planned to end their off-and-on boycott of the state House Wednesday in a move that could open the way for Republicans to call a final vote on the divisive right-to-work legislation that prompted the walkout.

Democrats will attend the House's 1:30 p.m. session, but have not yet decided if they will stick around if Republicans call for a final vote on the right-to-work bill, said Democratic Rep. Linda Lawson, a member of Democratic House Minority Leader Patrick Bauer's leadership team.

Most House Democrats have been staying away since the start of the 2012 session, denying Republicans a quorum to vote on plans to make Indiana the 23rd state that bans unions from collecting mandatory representation fees.

Republicans have levied $4,000 in fines against each of the boycotting Democrats thus far, although an ongoing legal challenge has blocked them from collecting those penalties.

By boycotting eight out of the 14 days the House has met this year, Democrats have also created a backlog of other priorities, such as a proposed statewide smoking ban and a plan to crack down on human sex-trafficking before the Super Bowl kicks off in Indianapolis Feb. 5.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma has said he plans to work on other measures that have been backlogged in the House before taking a final vote on right-to-work. Sticking to that schedule could give the returning Democrats another chance to block the measure.

Bosma spokeswoman Tory Flynn said Wednesday he plans to stick to that schedule.

Complaints of workplace bias reach an all-time high

By Allison Linn

The government received more complaints of worker discrimination its last fiscal year than ever before, but it was only a slight increase over 2010.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Tuesday that it received 99,947 complaints of worker discrimination during its 2011 fiscal year, which ended in September. That?s an increase of 25 complaints over the 2010 fiscal year.

Discrimination complaints surged in the 2008 fiscal year, when the agency received 95,402 complaints as the Great Recession was getting under way. They number of complaints fell somewhat in 2009, the year the recession officially ended, but they rose again in 2010 as the economy was?recovering slowly.

Justine Lisser, a spokeswoman for the EEOC, said the agency can?t?say for certain that the weak job market has caused the spike in complaints, although there may be a correlation.

The unemployment rate remains unusually high, at 8.5 percent, more than two years after the recession officially ended and the economy began?growing again.

Lisser also noted the agency has been working harder to inform employees and employers about its claims process, and?has made it easier to research claims criteria on its website.

In 2011, about 35 percent of the workers complained of race discrimination, according to the EEOC. Gender discrimination accounted for about 29 percent of the complaints, while age discrimination complaints made up about 24 percent.

About 26 percent charged employers with discriminating on the basis of a disability.

Many people charge more than one form of discrimination, so the percentages exceed 100 percent.

The government also said it resolved 112,499 complaints in fiscal year 2011. About 18 percent of those claims received a ?merit resolution,? meaning the person received some sort of settlement.

About two-thirds of those were found to have no reasonable cause for auction. Another 16 percent were closed for administrative reasons, such as that the person who charged discrimination didn?t respond to further requests from the EEOC.

Obama: US must reclaim values of fairness for all (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Keeping the American dream alive has become "the defining issue of our time," President Barack Obama says. He's using Tuesday night's State of the Union address to draw a stark election-year line with Republicans over how to keep the United States from eroding further into a nation of haves and have-nots.

In excerpts of his speech released in advance, Obama attacked income equality and offered his own economic revival plan built upon boosting manufacturing, energy and education. He warned Republicans in Congress that he will fight them if they try to obstruct him or restore an economy gutted by "outsourcing, bad debt and phony financial profits."

Driving everything about the speech: Jobs, including Obama's own. He was essentially making his case for re-election as he spelled out where he wants to take the country.

Obama was making his pitch to a bitterly divided Congress and to a country underwhelmed by his handling of the economy. Targeting anxiety about a slumping middle class, Obama was calling for the rich to pay more in taxes. Every proposal was to be underlined by the idea that hard work and responsibility still count.

"No debate is more important," Obama said in the excerpts released by the White House ahead of the 9 p.m. EST speech.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules," the president said.

>> what's interesting about this speech and everything we've learned about it is that there's a little bit of a tone. you're going to here a populist president obama deliver a populist state of the union . aides tell me it's not necessarily a campaign speech, but it's certainly a setting of the political agenda . here's one excerpt. i will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place. no, we will not go back to an economy weakened by outsourcing, bad debt and phony financial profits. tonight, i want to speak about how we move forward and lay out a blueprint for an economy that's built to last, an economy built on american manufacturing, american energy, skills for the american workers and a renewal of american values . perhaps, brian tonight the most interesting thing is the president is going to lay out the idea of the buffet rule -- a minimum tax for multi multimillionaires. it may actually double what mitt romney actually paid in taxes. that's going to be interesting fireworks.

>> all right, warren buffett , the famous businessman whose secretary is supposed to be in the gallery tonight as a guest of the first lady. chuck todd at the white house , thanks.

Weather Channel names Yahoo director Kenny as CEO (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Weather Channel said on Tuesday it has appointed David Kenny, a Yahoo Inc director, as its new chairman and chief executive, taking over from Mike Kelly.

The cable channel, which is jointly owned by Comcast Corp's NBC Universal and private equity firms Blackstone Group LP and Bain Capital, will be looking to Kenny's digital experience as president of Akamai Technologies Inc and managing partner of VivaKi, a digital advertising unit of Publicis Groupe.

Weather Channel is very popular across the Web and mobile devices. Former CEO Kelly will serve as a special adviser to the CEO, Weather Channel board and Bain Capital.

Kenny's decision to leave Akamai unexpectedly last October led to wide speculation that he would take over as chief executive of Yahoo after former CEO Carol Bartz left the company a month earlier. But Yahoo opted to appoint former PayPal executive Scott Thompson as CEO earlier this month.

Bachmann speaks at St. Paul anti-abortion rally (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? Rep. Michele Bachmann predicted Sunday that the November elections will end abortion as she made her first public appearance in Minnesota since dropping out of the Republican presidential race.

Bachmann spoke to hundreds of people opposed to legal abortion who traveled on school buses from across the state Sunday to mark the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, Minnesota Public Radio reported ( http://bit.ly/zIPAwh). The annual rally was sponsored by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, which said in a statement that the event drew more than 4,000 people.

Bachmann said the Supreme Court decision should be repealed within the next year.

"Here on our watch we will stand, we will stand for life, we will never forget, we will never give up, and next year we will gather in a day of celebration when we have finally ended abortion in this all important election," she said. "Join me this year. Choose life."

Bachmann has appeared at few public events in Minnesota in the past half-year, when her focus was on her GOP presidential campaign. She dropped out of the race after finishing sixth in Iowa's leadoff caucuses in early January.

She hasn't said if she'll run for a fourth term in Congress, representing suburbs north and east of the Twin Cities. In response to a question from a reporter, she said she'll give interviews soon on the subject.

Republican Reps. Erik Paulson, Chip Cravaack and John Kline also spoke at the event.

Planned Parenthood officials said they'll oppose any action that limits women's access to health care and legal abortion.

North Korea credits new leader with nuke testing (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea on Friday credited new leader Kim Jong Un with spearheading past nuclear testing, as it adds to a growing personality cult that portrays the young son of late leader Kim Jong Il as a confident military commander.

Kim Jong Un's youth ? he's believed to be in his late 20s ? and quick rise have spurred questions in foreign capitals about his readiness for leadership. But North Korea has dismissed such worries in recent days, saying Kim Jong Un worked closely with his father on military and economic matters.

The North's official Uriminzokkiri website said Friday that Kim "frightened" the country's enemies by commanding nuclear testing in the past. North Korea tested nuclear devices in 2006 and 2009, but the website didn't specify which tests Kim oversaw.

Uriminzokkiri described Kim Jong Un as "fully equipped" with the qualities of an extraordinary general, even during his years at Kim Il Sung Military University. The website also repeated the North's claim that he was involved in satellite launching but didn't elaborate.

North Korea's linking of Kim Jong Un to past nuclear testing comes as it pushes for the resumption of long-stalled six-nation aid-for-nuclear disarmament talks that also include China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Washington and its allies want the North to first show it is serious about previous disarmament commitments.

North Korea last week questioned Washington's generosity and sincerity, but suggested it remains open to suspending its uranium enrichment program if it can get the food aid it wants.

Kim Jong Un took over after his father and longtime ruler Kim Jong Il died in mid-December and has quickly been given many of the country's most important titles.

He was introduced as heir only in September 2010. Before that he had been kept out of the public eye for most of his life. He was quickly promoted to four-star general and named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Some of North Korea's neighbors and Washington have expressed worry about whether he can lead a nation of 24 million with a nuclear program as well as chronic trouble feeding all its people.

Kim Jong Il had 20 years of training under his own father, Kim Il Sung, before taking over. Even after his father's 1994 death, Kim Jong Il observed a three-year mourning period before formally assuming leadership.

A senior official told The Associated Press recently that Kim Jong Un spent years working closely with his late father and helped him make key policy decisions on economic and military affairs.

North Korea has also made it clear that Kim Jong Un will continue Kim Jong Il's "songun," or military-first, policy, and a steady stream of reports and images from state media has sought to show him as a fearless military commander who is comfortable with leadership.

North Korea also reported Friday that Kim Jong Un inspected two more military units.

Earlier this month, North Korea's state-run broadcaster aired a documentary that showed Kim Jong Un observing an April 2009 launch of a long-range rocket. It was the first indication of his involvement in the launch.

The documentary quoted Kim as threatening to wage war against any nation attempting to intercept the rocket, which North Korea claimed was carrying a communications satellite but the United States, South Korea and Japan said was really a test of its long-range missile technology.

Study: Indoor Tanning Linked With Early Onset of Skin Cancer (Time.com)

Given that indoor tanning beds were officially classified as a human carcinogen in 2009 -- up there with cigarettes and asbestos -- it should be fairly obvious that frequent tanning-booth exposure would increase your risk of skin cancer.

Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is "convincing," according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer -- which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. -- has thus far been inconsistent. (See pictures of a photographer's intimate account of her mother's cancer ordeal.)

Basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer, has traditionally been a disease of middle age. But it's been appearing with increasing frequency in people under 40, especially in women -- a demographic that also happens to like indoor tanning -- suggesting a link. So researchers at the Yale School of Public Health sought to study the association.

The study included 376 people under 40, who had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2010. They were matched with a control group of 390 dermatology patients who were diagnosed with minor skin conditions like cysts and warts. All participants had skin biopsies, and all were drawn from a Yale University database.

The researchers interviewed each participant about their UV exposure -- both in tanning beds and outdoors. They also asked about their history of sunburns, sunscreen use, family history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and their self-reported eye, skin and hair color.

The conclusion: people who had ever used a tanning booth were 69% more likely to develop early-onset basal cell carcinoma than never tanners. Those who used tanning booths more regularly -- for at least six years -- were more than twice a likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, compared with never tanners.

The study found that women were far more devoted than men to indoor tanning, which might help explain why 70% of all early onset basal cell carcinomas occur in females. The authors concluded that about 27% of cases of early onset disease -- including 43% of cases in women -- could be prevented if people simply stopped using tanning booths.

That's a tall order, considering that some 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds each year. Policy changes, such as the recent California ban on teen tanning, may help, the authors suggest. So would behavioral interventions aimed at women -- at least one study in 2010 found that the best way to get young women to tan less was to warn them about the skin-wrinkling effects of tanning-bed exposure, not the risk of skin cancer.

"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for [basal cell carcinoma] indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer," said Leah M. Ferrucci, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health, in a statement.

Malawi leader: Women can dress as they wish (AP)

BLANTYRE, Malawi ? A spate of recent attacks on women wearing pants and miniskirts has prompted Malawi's president to declare on national television that women have the right to choose their dress.

President Bingu wa Mutharika also denied Thursday that he ordered street children and vendors to attack women, who have been stripped of their pants and short skirts.

The president says, "Every woman and girl has the right to dress the way they wish."

That hasn't always been so. During the 1963-1994 dictatorship of the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, women in Malawi were banned from wearing trousers. Banda's "indecency in dress" laws were repealed when democracy came in 1994.

Women's rights activists plan to wear pants during a protest march Friday.

PSU on trial: Forget Paterno; let the trustees do their jobs

Many of the alumni calling for change in Penn State's board of trustees are doing so because they're upset over the firing of Joe Paterno.

They need a refresher course in why the legendary coach had to go, but that doesn't mean the board doesn't need its own attitude adjustment.

Let's deal first with Mr. Paterno. When his longtime assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, was charged with sexually abusing boys whom he brought to Penn State functions and university facilities, it drew attention to a football program where employees were afraid to speak up about misdeeds. Mr. Paterno was at the top of that hierarchy and had been for generations.

When young assistant coach Mike McQueary went to Mr. Paterno with details of an assault he said he'd witnessed in a university shower, he was reluctant to get into graphic sexual details out of respect for Mr. Paterno.

In a wide-ranging interview published in Saturday's Washington Post, Mr. Paterno said he didn't know what to do other than forward the report to university officials. He said he'd been reluctant to inquire further for fear of appearing to throw his weight around.

His power -- perceived or otherwise -- had grown beyond his ability to exercise and control it for good.

Penn State needed a change and the university's reputation would have suffered all the more if it had allowed its beloved, longtime coach to remain at the helm through the season or beyond. In removing him and forcing a resignation from former university president Graham Spanier, the trustees acted in Penn State's best interest.

Could the trustees have moved sooner? Perhaps. Last week, Penn State's new president, Rodney Erickson, said Mr. Spanier had briefed the board about the grand jury investigation of Mr. Sandusky months before his arrest. Still, it's not known how much detail they had at that time.

Once Mr. Sandusky and two other administrators were charged, the trustees wasted no time making changes in the offices of president and head football coach, as they should have.

Going forward, they must demand that university administrators conduct a thorough investigation into what was known or done in response to allegations against Mr. Sandusky, and they must disclose the results.

This will mean a change in the approach of a university that has been all too willing to hide behind its exemption from the state's open records law and its quasi-public status. The best that Penn State alumni can do is give the current board leaders a chance to prove they are up to the task.

Brooks' suit against Okla. hospital goes to trial

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) ? Country music star Garth Brooks is suing an Oklahoma hospital that he says reneged on a promise to name a building after his late mother in exchange for a $500,000 donation.

Brooks' lawsuit against Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon seeks the return of the December 2005 donation. The trial at the Rogers County District Court begins Tuesday.

Brooks says hospital officials showed him mock-ups of buildings bearing Colleen Brooks' name and told him his donation was earmarked for such a project.

The hospital denies any wrongdoing and in court filings says Brooks' donation was "anonymous and unconditional."

St. John's Vs. South Florida Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

St. John's will be taking on the South Florida Bulls in a Big East Conference basketball game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

It's been a tough year for the Red Storm this season. The Johnnies (8-9, 2-4) have struggled to score, only averaging 66 points per game. It's not a surprise that the team has seen it's share of bumps in the road. With such a young team there just isn't a lot of consistency right now.

South Florida (10-8, 3-2) has looked solid this campaign with a winning record thus far in conference play. The Bulls are led by senior forward Augustus Gilchrist and junior guard Jawanza Poland who average 11 and 10 points respectively.

South Florida is actually even more offensively challenged than the Red Storm (61 points per game) but plays with much more experience. The one area St. John's could dominate is on the glass. While the Red Storm aren't as big inside, the Bulls are not very good at cleaning the glass. St. John's can also look to run off of turnovers, which South Florida can be prone to in bunches.

Moe Harkless is the unquestioned star of the team and could have his way inside. If St. John's is going to win on the road against a tough Big East foe, Harkless will have to lead the young squad.

The game can be seen on SNY and ESPN3.

Nigeria labor announces suspension of fuel strike (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Nigeria unions suspended their nationwide strike on Monday, hours after President Goodluck Jonathan partially reinstated subsidies to keep gasoline prices low and after authorities deployed soldiers, who fired over the heads of protesters.

Peter Esele, president of the Trade Union Congress, told journalists in Nigeria's capital Abuja cast the sudden developments as a victory for labor unions as the strike was entering its sixth day. However, many Nigerians remain angry that gas prices rose at all in a nation where few see benefits from the country's oil riches, and protesters' rage also turned on government corruption and inefficiency.

Just before the strike was suspended, soldiers in Lagos fired apparent live rounds over the heads of several hundred protesters who were walking to a park where demonstrations were held last week ? and where armored personnel carriers and troops awaited on Monday.

The deployment of troops is a sensitive issue in a nation with a young democracy and a history of military coups. President Goodluck Jonathan said in a speech televised early Monday that agitators have hijacked the demonstrations, which were initially focused on his removal of a fuel subsidy on Jan. 1. That caused gas prices to spike from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also largely doubled.

Jonathan announced in his speech aired early Monday the government would subsidize gasoline prices to immediately reduce the price to about $2.27 a gallon (60 cents a liter).

The strike began Jan. 9, paralyzing the nation of more than 160 million people. Tens of thousands of people protested in cities across Nigeria. At least 10 people were killed. Red Cross volunteers have treated more than 600 people injured in protests since the strike began, officials said.

Authorities also targeted some foreign media outlets in Lagos Monday. Officers of the State Security Service, Nigeria's secret police, raided an office compound used by the BBC and CNN, witnesses said. Marilyn Ogar, a secret police spokeswoman, said she had no information about the raid.

96% The Muppets

All Critics (166) | Top Critics (40) | Fresh (159) | Rotten (6)

The film's success is owed to the fact that the living, breathing actors understand the show belongs to the Muppets. In their capable paws, claws, and flippers, the fun, kindness, and total, unadulterated wackiness of The Muppet Show is finally back.

The Muppets is a joyful mix of the nostalgic past and a vibrant present. It tops the list of family movies for the holidays. The movie asks the question, "Do you have what it takes to be one of the Muppets?" Of course, we do.

The new muppet movie, written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, is a total delight. Any fears that the muppets may have been unwisely thrust into something that is outside of their inherent character can be safely allayed.

A return to form for Kermit and company.
