Chile's Allende wins Danish literature prize

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) ? Chilean author Isabel Allende has won a Danish literature prize for her "magical and spellbinding storytelling."

The 500,000 kroner ($86,000) Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize is given to a writer whose works compare with those of the legendary Andersen, who was born in 1805 and wrote about 160 fairytales and poems before his death in 1875.

More than 57 million copies of Allende's books, which incorporate elements of magic and fantasy, have been sold worldwide, most notably "The House of the Spirits," which catapulted her to fame when it was published in 1982.

Prize organizers praised Allende's "mixture of various ages, cultures, forms of knowledge and myths" that have given her storytelling "wingspan and height."

Previous award recipients include Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho and "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling.

Concerns with contagion - STDs - MedHelp

Welcome to the forum.??Thanks for your questions.

2,3) I'm going first to these, because they contain the most important information you provide -- that you were immunized against hepatitis B virus (HBV) 6 years ago.??You can be very certain you are protected.??Although it is true that the vaccine isn't perfect, it is over 90% reliable -- probably close to 99%.??If you would like to confirm your immunity, you could be tested.??Having been immunized, a test for HBV antibody would probably be positive.??If so, you will know you are 100% protected.??In that case, you can safely have any and all sexual practices with your partner, without condoms for vaginal or anal sex.

1,4) Oral sex probably rarely transmits HBV, even with oral sores.??In the slight chance your immunization didn't work, condoms are highly protective.

Your last, unnumbered question also is important. Not all people with chronic HBV infection are highly infectious; and if your partner's hepatitis B surface antigen test (HBsAg) is only intermittently positive, it is likely her blood level of the virus is low and transmission risk might also be very low.??Also, she could have a test for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg); if that's negative, as it is in most chronically infected persons, then she is minimally infectious.

So here is my summary advice:??You and your partner should go together to the doctor or clinic where here HBV infection is managed.??You can have a test for HBV antibody to check whether you are protected from your immunization; and the doctor can also advise the two of you about sexual transmission risks.??Most likely you need not use condoms and can be confident you'll never catch HBV.

    I hope this has helped.??Best wishes--??HHH, MD

Communication Items You'll Want Before TSHTF ? Part 1

    Dan & Sheila

Having good radio equipment is important for many reasons. What will you do when there is no Internet? What will you do when there is no cellphone service? How will you know what?s going on in other parts of the country, let alone the world? Radio signals don?t need an intermediary, they just bounce all over the earth and are received by radios.

    ?

    ?

It?s not even necessary that you transmit (speak) on the radio, but the information you can garner from just listening to others from far away is worth the time it takes to understand how to use a radio.

There are many ways to go in purchasing a communications radio, depending on your budget. You can buy yourself a brand new, state-of-the-art Kenwood or I-com for example, both of which are great radios. But the expense can be quite high, typically in the many hundreds of dollars.

A less expensive but just as viable way to go is a ?free band radio?. This is a 10 meter ham radio that has had additional freeband frequencies installed. This will expand coverage to include the 12, 11 (the CB frequency band) and sometimes 9 meter bands. In a converted CB radio, this is called a radio with extra channels.

A 10 meter radio is very common and inexpensive, as well as their low-rent cousins, CB radios. Many can be found on ebay for under $200 and may already have the additional frequencies installed. Also any good SSB (single side band) CB radio can have what they call ?Extra Channels Added? by any good tech. (Lots of mods here?http://www.dxzone.com/tag-cb-mods/.) CB shops at truck stops often times have used free band radios for sale at good prices, but check Ebay for prices on used radios before going.

Any frequency on the radio can be used in various modes, the most common being AM, Single Side Band (SSB), Upper Side Band (USB) and CW. CW means constant wave mode, which is the mode used for Morse Code and RTTY. It is possible to send several and receive multiple pages of text files via RTTY. The software needed can be found here (http://gmfsk.sourceforge.net/?). Radios with a CW mode like the RCI 2950 (et al) and the Uniden HR2510 have the CW mode installed. There are other models that also have CW mode, however no CB radios have CW mode. You can send pictures and text files to others, similar to a fax. This will be an excellent way for the people to maintain contact with others during times of crisis or total collapse.

The legal frequency range of a Citizens Band radio is 26905 megahertz through 27405 megahertz (mostly in 10 kilocycle steps per channel), covering the 40 channels of CB radio. Freebanding is when an unlicensed radio operator uses the non-allocated frequencies in the 11 meter band (CB radio and beyond). When society has collapsed, who care who has a license?

Most freebanders use the Single Side Band (SSB) mode of these channels as opposed to the AM mode. The chatter you may have heard on channel 19 (the truckers channel) is in the AM mode. AM mode of operation is limited in range, however using the SSB mode affords greater range and more output power. A legal CB radio has 4 watts output on the AM band and 12 watts on the SSB band.

This means that when conditions are right (sunspots, etc.) SSB signals can travel greater distances than those in the AM mode. One early morning, while driving west on I-90 in Idaho, I made a contact with Tokyo, Japan using SSB and a HR 2510 Uniden radio. That was a contact of over 7000 miles with less than 20 watts of power.

Once the world goes in to collapse there will still be thousands of people using the freebands. This can be used to create a radio round-robin or?relay?to share information and help others.

    The international call frequencies are:

27555 USB The US and the world except for Europe

    26285 USB Europe

First a little bit about how to use a call frequency. A call frequency is a frequency on which we make contact with someone who would like to have a conversation with us. The parties then go to another frequency of their choice to continue the conversation. It is unlike the chatter you may have heard on the AM side ? CB Channel 19 and all that noise. The conversation is called a QSO.

First we must wait for a moment of silence to break in and make our call. The protocol for asking for a QSO is like this:

?C-Q, C-Q, NEW MEXICO CALLING AND LISTING ON 27560? is a typical call or CQ (?seek-you?). This tells listeners on the call frequency where to find you to have a conversation. Then we move our frequency dial to that frequency. Once there we make another call like this:

?CQ CQ New Mexico calling for any and all stations.? Or if your are looking to make a contact in a specific place:

?CQ CQ New Mexico Calling for all stations in _____? (the place of your choosing) ?and standing by for contact.?

    Antennas

There are many different kinds of viable antennas to use with your radio, some very cheap some very expensive.

Some of you may choose to make a wire antenna. One of the simplest wire antennas is the ?Inverted V? ? very good for long distance communications (what the radio community calls ?skip?). The inverted V can be made for the cost of some wire and a pole.

Others may prefer to purchase something ready made, in a box. For those of you who do, we can strongly suggest the ?V Quad?. This is a directional aluminum antenna that sends a strong signal in only one direction. Like the directional TV antennas of past times, this antenna needs a rotor (this is a motor to turn the antenna from the radio shack or you can use the ?armstrong? method). It is the best non-homebrew antenna that I have ever used.?http://www.livecbradio.com/11-meter-loop-antenna.htm

Either way, when the conditions are right you?ll be talking to the world.

When radio operators say, ?conditions are right? they mean that the skip conditions are good, allowing the radio signals to be received over longer distances than normal. Skip is when the signal travels along a mostly horizontal plane before it eventually hits the ionosphere. Like a flat rock across a lake, the signal will skip along rather than pierce the ionosphere and go out into space. This skip can cause your signal to be received with nearly as much strength as it had when it left your antenna. The contact I had with Tokyo gave me an S10 signal strength, and that is as high as it gets. Sunspots are generally the cause for good skip conditions.

Coming up in Part 2 ? Family Radio Service, Business Radio Service and Scanners.

Wakeboarder's finger found in lake trout months later

    By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

When Hans Galassi lost four of his fingers in a wakeboarding accident in Idaho, he joked, wryly, that they had become fish food.

He wasn?t surprised, then, when the Bonner County sheriff called him up, telling him he had a funny story to tell him.

?I was like: Let me guess, they found my fingers in a fish,? Galassi, 31, told the Spokesman-Review. (The newspaper?s headline was equally flippant: "Lake trout gives fisherman the finger.")

Galassi was wakeboarding on Priest Lake in northern Idaho on July 4 when his hand was caught in the cord, fully severing his fingers. His friends rushed him to a resort and he was transported to the hospital by helicopter.

Then, on Sept. 11, a man named Nolan Calvin was fishing on the west side of Priest Lake when he caught a large lake trout. As he was cleaning the fish, he found what appeared to be a severed human finger, according to a press release from the Bonner County Sheriff?s Office.

According to the sheriff?s department statement: ?It is unknown, of course, how long the fish actually retained the finger in its digestive track, however, it was noted that the finger was in remarkably good condition at the time of recovery.?

Sheriff?s Detective Sgt. Gary Johnston was particularly impressed.

?You fall asleep in your bathtub or hot tub, you come out and your fingers are all puckered up and prune-like. And it wasn?t like that,? he told the Spokesman-Review.

Calvin, the fisherman, placed the finger on ice, which he turned over to deputies, who were able to derive a decent enough fingerprint to trace back to Galassi. The fish, officials concluded, had traveled about eight miles north of where Galassi lost his fingers.

The investigation concluded, the sheriff?s department offered Galassi back his finger.

Galassi told the Spokesman-Review that he declined.

?I?m like, uhhh, I?m good,? he said.

Finding Mecca in America - SISR / ISSR News and Events ...

    Finding Mecca in America
How Islam Is Becoming an American Religion

    Mucahit Bilici 272 pages | 10 halftones, 6 line drawings, 3 tables | 6 x 9 | ? 2012 http://www.press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/F/bo14127843.html

The events of 9/11 had a profound impact on American society, but they had an even more lasting effect on Muslims living in the United States. Once practically invisible, they suddenly found themselves overexposed. By describing how Islam in America began as a strange cultural object and is gradually sinking into familiarity, Finding Mecca in America illuminates the growing relationship between Islam and American culture as Muslims find a homeland in America. Rich in ethnographic detail, the book is an up-close account of how Islam takes its American shape.

In this book, Mucahit Bilici traces American Muslims? progress from outsiders to natives and from immigrants to citizens. Drawing on the philosophies of Simmel and Heidegger, Bilici develops a novel sociological approach and offers insights into the civil rights activities of Muslim Americans, their increasing efforts at interfaith dialogue, and the recent phenomenon of Muslim ethnic comedy.? Theoretically sophisticated, Finding Mecca in America is both a portrait of American Islam and a groundbreaking study of what it means to feel at home.

    Review Quotes

Robert Wuthnow | author of America and the Challenges of Religious Diversity
?Interpretations of Muslim assimilation have gravitated between two arguments: that Muslims will remain as permanent outsiders or that Muslims will blend in with little difficulty at all. Mucahit Bilici demonstrates how wanting these arguments are. Finding Mecca in America takes us into the uncharted territory of what it is actually like to be Muslim immigrants in the United States. I am especially impressed by the study?s theoretical depth and empirical insights.?

    Jos? Casanova | Georgetown University
?A work of considerable originality, Mucahit Bilici offers a well crafted and insightful analysis of the complex process of integration that Muslim immigrants face in the United States since 9/11. Bilici?s look at Islam as a religion in the American system is rich and rewarding.?

Christian Smith | Center for the Study of Religion and Society, University of Notre Dame
?A very insightful and important book that helps us think better about a badly understudied subject of immense importance, the meaning of Muslims in America. Bilici?s insights help to break through simplistic stereotypes and deepen our understanding of Islam in the United States, while expanding our imagination concerning the presences of minority religions in a Christian/secular nation.?

EPL referee reports Twitter cancer abuse to police

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 3:13 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Premier League referee Mark Halsey has asked police to investigate abusive comments about him on Twitter after officiating in the heated match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The insulting online messages on Monday referenced Halsey's battle with throat cancer in 2009.

Halsey made two contentious decisions in United's 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday that went in favor of the visitors.

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Jonny Evans, and United was later awarded a penalty kick that was scored by Robin van Persie.

Halsey returned to refereeing in March 2010 following his cancer battle.

No Premier League referees have Twitter accounts, according to the body that oversees match officials in England.

Sources: NFL, officials' union hold talks

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL and the officials' union were talking again.

Two people familiar with the talks say that the NFL and the locked out officials' union met Sunday.

It was uncertain whether progress was made in an attempt to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, or when further negotiations would take place.

The two people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the talks are not being made public.

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. The league has been using replacement officials, and through three weeks of the regular season there has been much criticism over the way some games are being handled.

Earlier Sunday, the NFL players' union sent an open letter to team owners calling for an end to the lockout.

On Sunday, there were more suspect calls during several games.

Replacement officials admitted making two mistakes in Minnesota's victory over San Francisco, while a few other games included questionable calls that could have affected the outcomes.

Referee Ken Roan said he twice granted 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh video challenges after Harbaugh called timeout in the fourth quarter. Neither challenge should have been allowed once Harbaugh asked for time.

"What I told him was, 'Well you challenged it not knowing what the result of the play was going to be,'" Roan said. "So I granted him the challenge and we went and looked at it. That was wrong. I should not have."

Both mistakes happened in the span of six plays in Minnesota's 24-13 upset of the 49ers.

"My interpretation of it was that he could do that based upon the time factors and not knowing it was a challengeable play to begin with when he called timeout," Roan said. "If you don't have a timeout to lose, you can't make a challenge."

The sides also met last week for two days, but the negotiations remained far apart. Also, the league last week warned teams that it won't tolerate confrontational behavior toward the new officials.

Negotiations with the NFL Referees Association broke down several times during the summer, including just before the season. This is the first time the league is using replacements since 2001.

    >>> finally tonight, washington, d.c. was a very sad place this weekend, with a lot of sad children all of whom had been so excited, along with their parents, at the birth of the new panda cub at the national six days. doctors say it died of a liver disorder, and for that entire species, survival is difficult, even when helped along by the rest of the experts in the world. our report by chief correspondent ann thompson.

    >> reporter: this is the face that has stolen thousands of hearts. the now two-month-old panda born at the san diego zoo .

    >> they're so cute when they were little babies .

    >> reporter: when first born, pandas are pink, hairless and the size of a stick of butter, with the morality rate high in captivity, this is a miracle.

    >> they're an endangered species , so having this for the wild population.

    >> reporter: the panda numbers are threatened because the bamboo forests where they live and eat are being cut down for farming and development. today, only 1600 giant pandas live in the wild in southern china , with 300 in captivity, including those outside of mainland china .

    >> pandas are amazing creatures.

    >> reporter: they have driven chinese scientists to extreme, donning panda suits to introduce them to the wild, showing tapes of others mating. even turning to blue pills to help them with what should come naturally. why do they have trouble mating? first, they are solitary creatures, living only in the wild, and female are only able to get pregnant for a short time. these two at the zoo in atlanta have produced three cubs.

When you rear-end the car in front of you at a stoplight, you may feel a mix of different emotions such as anger, anxiety, and guilt. The person whose car you rear-ended may feel angered and frustrated by your carelessness, but it's unlikely that he'll feel much guilt.

The ability to identify and distinguish between negative emotions helps us address the problem that led to those emotions in the first place. But while some people can tell the difference between feeling angry and guilty, others may not be able to separate the two. Distinguishing between anger and frustration is even harder.

In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Emre Demiralp of the University of Michigan and his colleagues hypothesized that clinically depressed people would be less able to discriminate between different types of negative emotions compared to healthy individuals. Clinically depressed people often experience feelings of sadness, anger, fear, or frustration that interfere with everyday life.

"It is difficult to improve your life without knowing whether you are sad or angry about some aspect of it," says Demiralp. "For example, imagine not having a gauge independently indicating the gasoline level of your car. It would be challenging to know when to stop for gas. We wanted to investigate whether people with clinical depression had emotional gauges that were informative and whether they experienced emotions with the same level of specificity and differentiation as healthy people."

The researchers recruited 106 people between the ages of 18 and 40 to participate in their study. Half of the participants were diagnosed with clinical depression and half were not. Over the course of seven to eight days, they carried a Palm Pilot, which prompted them to record emotions at 56 random times during the day. To report their emotions, they marked the degree to which they felt seven negative emotions (sad, anxious, angry, frustrated, ashamed, disgusted, and guilty) and four positive emotions (happy, excited, alert, and active) on a scale from one to four.

Demiralp and his colleagues looked at participants' tendency to give multiple emotions (e.g., disgusted and frustrated) similar rankings at a given point in time. According to their methodology, the more two emotions were reported together the less the person differentiated between these emotions.

The researchers found that clinically depressed people had less differentiated negative emotions than those who were healthy, supporting their hypothesis. Notably, they did not find the same difference between groups for positive emotionspeople with and without diagnosed clinical depression were equally able to differentiate between positive emotions. It is possible that people who are clinically depressed differentiate more between positive emotions as a coping mechanism.

Demiralp and his colleagues argue that the procedure used in the study to record emotions may be particularly useful in studying the emotional experience of clinically depressed people, paving the way for more treatment and therapy options in the future.

"Our results suggest that being specific about your negative emotions might be good for you", says Demiralp. "It might be best to avoid thinking that you are feeling generally bad or unpleasant. Be specific. Is it anger, shame, guilt or some other emotion? This can help you circumvent it and improve your life. It is one of our overarching goals to investigate approaches for facilitating this kind of emotional intelligence at a large scale in the population."
