Afghan officials: Local policeman kills 11 people

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan officials are looking for a member of a government-backed village defense force suspected of killing 11 civilians at a house in southern Afghanistan.

Salim Assas, an Afghan National Police commander for several provinces in the south, said Friday that the gunman was a member of the Afghan Local Police, which is overseen by the Interior Ministry.

Uruzgan provincial police spokesman Fareed Ayal says the gunman ? a member of the Hazara ethnic faction ? killed the civilians, who belong to the Pashtun majority in Khas Uruzgan district.

The Afghan Local Police program provides security in areas where troops are not deployed.

Human Rights Watch issued a report last year alleging that some units were committing human rights abuses, including rape and murder.
