UPDATE 1-Golf-Mahan in control at Canadian Open with two-shot lead

Sat Jul 27, 2013 12:52am BST

* Bubba Watson moves into contention

* Canadian Mike Weir gives locals reason to cheer (Completes round adds detail, quotes)

By Steve Keating

OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 26 (Reuters) - American John Merrick set the early pace with a course-record-equaling 10-under 62 but compatriot Hunter Mahan fired a 64 to grab a two-shot lead after the second round of the Canadian Open on Friday.

In ideal early scoring conditions, Merrick had an eagle at the second and eight birdies over his final 12 holes to complete a career-low, error-free round that tied the Glen Abbey Golf Club course record set by Leonard Thompson in 1981 and matched by Greg Norman in 1986.

"Everything kind of clicked today," said Merrick, a winner at February's Northern Trust Open. "I think I played a couple rounds in the past few weeks where I didn't make a birdie and that doesn't happen a lot.

"Maybe that all kind of came back together. Everything came in a rush."

As impressive as Merrick's display was, it was not enough to fend off Mahan, who capped his round in sizzling fashion with three straight birdies to knock his American compatriot from top of the leaderboard with a two-day total of 13-under 131.

"I saw kind of going into nine he (Merrick) was at 11 ... 62 is a pretty good round," said Mahan. "But I didn't really think I had to catch him. There's so much golf to be played here.

"I just wanted to go out there and not try to shoot for a score but just try to play golf.

"I think I was able to birdie the last three because I just kind of kept my head up and kept going."

Big-hitting Bubba Watson, the hugely popular former Masters champion, muscled his way up the leaderboard with five-under 67 to sit alone in third, just four off the pace and well-placed to take a run at his first title since Augusta last year.

Australian Aaron Baddeley returned a 68 for the second straight day to move into a tie for fourth with PGA Tour rookie Patrick Reed (68) on eight-under 136.

Canada's Mike Weir had the local fans cheering as he mounted a second-day charge by moving up the leaderboard with five-under 67 to sit nine back.

The 2003 Masters champion, who is battling back from a string of injuries, had the Glen Abbey crowd buzzing as his name popped up on the leaderboard in a tie for third with 14 holes completed.

Weir wobbled down the home stretch with bogey's on three of his final four holes but at four-under 140 is the top Canadian easily surviving the one-under cut.

Eighteen Canadians teed off on Friday bidding to become the first home grown winner of the national championship since Pat Fletcher in 1954 but only Weir, Brad Fritsch, Roger Sloan and David Hearn, with the help of three birdies on his final three holes, will play the weekend.

British former world number one Luke Donald, who missed the cut at last week's British Open, will also sit out the weekend in Canada returning a 71 to miss the cut by a stroke. (Editing by Frank Pingue)

Google's new Nexus 7 forces Apple's iPad Mini into a corner

Your gadgets

Google Nexus 7 tablet

Matt Nighswander / NBC News

Since its release in late 2012, many have considered Apple's iPad Mini to be the 7-inch tablet to beat. Now Google's new Nexus 7 makes it look beaten. Apple needs to step up this fall or it risks being left in the dust.

Given that the iPad Mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model while the Nexus 7 starts at $229 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model, it's difficult to justify purchasing the Apple device unless you happen to have a great deal invested in the iOS ecosystem already. But if, like many people, you use Netflix for movies, Amazon for books and Spotify for music, well, then you can pretty much choose any tablet you like.

The cost difference is just the beginning of the Nexus 7's advantage over the iPad Mini though. Don't believe it? Let's compare.

Display
The new Nexus 7 rubs the iPad Mini's biggest weakness ? it's appalling display quality ? in Apple's face. Unlike many iGadgets, the iPad Mini does not offer a high-resolution "Retina" display. Instead it has a 7.9-inch display with a 1024 x 768 resolution at 163 pixels per inch (ppi). The Nexus 7 offers a 7.02-inch display with 1920 x 1200 resolution at 323 ppi. While it might be challenging to see the difference between the iPad Mini's display and, say, the one on Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3, the new Nexus 7 clearly stands apart. Pixel-density difference is especially important when it comes to e-book reading ? a typical use for a 7- or 8-inch tablet ? because higher resolution displays are easier on the eyes.

Google Nexus 7 tablet

Matt Nighswander / NBC News

Guts
The iPad Mini runs on Apple's A5 chip (which clocks in at 1 GHz) while the Nexus 7 uses a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro. Apple tends to be mum about the RAM offered by its devices, but a teardown revealed that the iPad Mini rocks 512 MB. The Nexus 7, on the other hand, has 2GB. All Nexus 7 models have GPS capabilities built in while the entry-level iPad Mini relies on Wi-Fi to get location data (though the LTE-capable model does offer assisted GPS).

Both gadgets have 5-megapixel cameras in the rear and 1.2-megapixel cameras in the front.

Size
Purely speaking about measurements, the Nexus 7 has the iPad Mini beat on weight (it's 0.04 pounds lighter), but the iPad Mini is a bit thinner (it measures in at 7.2 millimeters while the Nexus 7 is 8.65 millimeters). The two gadgets are the same height (7.87 inches), but the Nexus 7 is narrower (4.49 inches) than the iPad Mini (5.3 inches). The smaller width measurement makes the Nexus 7 incredibly comfortable to hold, even with one hand spread out across its back.

Matt Nighswander / NBC News

Other little things
The Nexus 7 supports wireless charging. And its MicroUSB port also has SlimPort capabilities, meaning that it can connect to an HDMI adapter. (Unlike with the iPad Mini, there aren't any proprietary Lightning connectors involved.)

Battery
According to their makers, the iPad Mini gets 10 hours of active use while the Nexus 7 gets 9 hours. (However, Google does point out that simply Web browsing or e-reading will make the Nexus 7 last for 10 hours as well.)

Apple's 7-inch problem
While Apple's 9.5-inch iPad dominates its size group, the company is facing a great deal of competition in the 7- to 8-inch tablet category. Until now, Apple managed to keep the competition at bay, but the Nexus 7 leaps above and beyond the iPad Mini.

What worries us more is that, according to fresh rumors, Apple may not be planning to significantly upgrade the iPad Mini ? with a high-resolution display and all ? until sometime in 2014. If that is indeed the case, then the argument for buying a small iPad this holiday season will be fairly weak.

Ethics committee extends Michele Bachmann probe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Allegations surrounding Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann and her brief presidential campaign are getting further examination from the House Ethics Committee.

The panel said in a brief statement Friday it is extending until at least September a review of Bachmann's case, which was referred to it by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent investigative body. The panel said it would announce any further action by Sept. 11.

The committee announced similar extensions of OCE investigations for three other members of Congress: Reps. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., Pete Roskam, R-Ill., and John Tierney, D-Mass. The panel said it would announce further action on those cases, too, in September.

William McGinley, a lawyer for Bachmann, acknowledged the OCE investigation in March, saying it was tied to her presidential bid and that the tea party favorite was cooperating with the investigation. Bachmann has denied any wrongdoing but announced in May she would not seek re-election.

In a statement Friday, McGinley said the committee's extension was routine and expressed confidence that Bachmann will be vindicated.

"Today's statement by the House Ethics Committee emphasizes that its customary 45-day extension does not 'indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,'" McGinley said. "It does not speak to the merits of this matter, and any inference to the contrary is false."

He added, "We are confident the committee will discover, upon proper review, that the highly politicized allegations made at the OCE level were baseless and without merit."

The OCE is an independent House panel run by a board of directors who are outside Congress, although some of them are former lawmakers. The OCE's investigative reports and recommendations for further investigation go to the member-run House Ethics Committee, the panel that decides whether rules were violated. The committee can then vote to continue investigations, launch its own formal investigations or dismiss cases outright.

OCE referred each of the investigations to Ethics Committee in June, recommending full investigations. The House committee was required to take action on the cases or release the full reports of the OCE by Sunday. Instead, it will continue to look into all of the cases for another 45 days.

Because not all of the OCE reports were revealed Friday, it's not clear what specifically some of the investigations of the lawmakers entail.

In a statement, Tierney said he believed the OCE investigation involving him was related to his personal financial disclosure reports.

"I welcome the opportunity to finally put this issue to rest after many years of my opponents attacking me," Tierney said.

Ethicial questions surrounded Tierney's bruising 2012 re-election campaign against former State Sen. Richard Tisei.

Tierney's wife, Patrice Tierney, served one month in federal prison in 2011 after admitting she was "willfully blind" to the source of millions of dollars in income for her brothers, Robert and Daniel Eremian, who were running an illegal, offshore gambling operation.

Patrice Tierney managed a checking account for her brother Robert and helped him to prepare a false tax return, according to her plea agreement.

John Tierney has always denied any involvement in his wife's activities and was re-elected last year. He also has defended his wife, saying she was wronged by her brothers and believed the income in the account she managed was from legal businesses and services.

Bishop also faced ethics complaints during his 2012 re-election campaign. He was criticized by his Republican opponent for helping a constituent ? who later donated $5,000 to his campaign ? to obtain a fireworks permit.

"As I have said many times, I welcome a fair-minded review of the facts because I have done nothing wrong," Bishop said.

Roskam's office said in a statement the OCE investigation into him involved a trip he took to Taiwan. Roskam spokeswoman Stephanie Kittredge said he informed the Ethics Committee about the trip and his planned activities on it before he left.

Roskam took the unusual step of publicizing his OCE report on Friday because he said he had done nothing wrong.

"The record reflects that Rep. Roskam fully complied with all laws, rules, and procedures related to privately sponsored travel," Kittredge said. "The trip was vetted and approved by the House Ethics Committee, the body legally authorized to make determinations on congressional conduct."

Bachmann's White House bid ended quickly after a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Iowa's leadoff presidential caucuses but has caused lingering problems for her.

In January, a former Bachmann aide sent a letter to the Federal Election Commission alleging that Bachmann made improper payments to an Iowa state senator who served as her state chairman. A suit by a different aide alleging that someone in her team stole a private email list of home-school supporters for use in the campaign was dismissed last month.

Earlier this month, Javier Sanchez, a former top aide to Bachmann, was arrested and charged with thefts that took place in a House office building. Sanchez has left Bachmann's office and is charged with theft of money or goods less than $1,000 in value.

Groupon Updates Its Breadcrumb Payments App With Deal Redemptions, Offline Mode And More Customization Beyond Restaurants

GrouponRedemptionsIn May of this year, to raise its game against the likes of Square and PayPal, Groupon relaunched its Breadcrumb point-of-sale app -- originally conceived as a payments app for restaurants -- as a free payments app for all local merchants. Today, the daily deals company is embarking on stage-two of that strategy by adding in a number of new features in an update to make the app, part of the company's wider suite of payment services and apps, significantly more usable (but still free). They include the ability to take payments when you're offline; redeem Groupon deals; and customize the app to fit specific business categories, like beauty salons or cafes. The moves, Groupon hopes, will not only drive more transactions through Breadcrumb, but give Groupon one more way of upselling those merchants to other services -- like Groupons themselves.

Article: Digital Ad Spending in Mexico Soars amid Slower TV Growth

Online ad revenues growth in Mexico continued to gain speed for a third consecutive year, according to a June 2013 Interactive Advertising Bureau M?xico (IAB M?xico) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report. After dropping from an impressive 91% growth in 2008, the expansion has exceeded 30% each year since 2009, reaching MXN6.4 billion ($486 billion) in 2012, when it registered a solid 38% improvement.

eMarketer benchmarks its digital ad spending estimates, which include online and mobile ad spending, against IAB M?xico figures. For the year 2012, digital ad spending amounted to $542.2 billion. Boosted by a growing smartphone user base that will represent 45% of all mobile phone users in 2014 and TV broadcasters? plans to live-stream FIFA World Cup matches via online and mobile properties that year, digital ad spending will nearly double to break the $1 billion mark for the first time by next year.

But not all news has been positive in the advertising industry in Mexico. According to a June 2013 ZenithOptimedia report provided to eMarketer by Starcom MediaVest Group, TV ad spending registered negative changes of 4.8% and 5.6%, respectively, in 2011 and 2012.

The ZenithOptimedia finding, while an outlier, reflects a slowdown consensus over TV ad spending in Mexico. In June 2012 PwC estimated that TV ad spending will post single digit growth rates between 2011 and 2013?down from 23.8% in 2010?and will return to until 2014 when double digit rates (22.8%) will return. Similarly, a December 2012 GroupM estimate also predicted that growth in the category will remain in the single digits through 2013.

Despite the recent slowdown, TV advertising is set to rebound this year and will certainly keep taking in the bulk of advertising dollars in Mexico, especially considering that 94.9% of households in Mexico had a TV in 2012, according to Instituto Nacional de Estad?stica y Geograf?a (INEGI) data. By comparison, only 32.2% of households had a computer and a lower 26% had an internet connection.

Oregon football?s summer workouts identify leaders and build base for fall camp

It doesn?t take a calendar to tell Oregon football players where they are in their summer.

There?s another week of conditioning work for the Ducks, and then a week off to travel home or otherwise get refreshed before the first practice on Aug. 5.

And, yes, only six weeks away is that first game, against Nicholls State on Aug. 31.

?I feel like when you realize the season is coming up, you start getting that sense of urgency,? junior cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu said. ?Everybody starts buckling down and making sure they?re ready physically and mentally.?

?I think everybody is excited,? added linebacker Boseko Lokombo, explaining that with summer workouts ?winding down and getting closer to camp, and then all of a sudden, we?re going to be playing in a game.?

For the summer, the obvious competition on the new practice fields has been in seven-on-seven scrimmages, largely devoted to the passing game and directed by the quarterbacks. But even in weightlifting, center Hroniss Grasu offered the reminder that ?we?re all pretty competitive,? which prompts him to regularly check on how many pounds some of the defensive linemen are taking on as a challenge.

What?s also been happening during these summer workouts, with coaches not present, is that the new group of leaders among the players has continued to develop, and there seems no question that topping that list is sophomore quarterback Marcus Mariota.

?Marcus has always been kind of a quiet, humble kid but he?s stepping up,? Lokombo said. ?I always hear him talking to the players and joking around.

?He?s a tremendous leader, a natural leader and (everything) kind of comes around him.?

A year ago, Mariota hadn?t played in a game for the Ducks, and hadn?t even been named the starting quarterback. My, how all that has changed this summer.

?It?s a little bit different from the standpoint that I have to step up as a leader, be more vocal and help out the younger guys,? Mariota said.

On leading with words as well as deeds, Mariota said ?it?s not something (the UO coaches) are forcing me to do, it?s just something that I kind of want to do, just so the guys can look at me and say, ?Hey, we can listen to him.???

Mariota spent last weekend not only working as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy, but getting up close with some very accomplished leaders in Eli and Peyton Manning, both quarterbacks of Super Bowl winners. The Mannings took part in a question-and-answer session for the college quarterbacks, along with offering advice on things as varied as film study to ?how you handle yourself off the field,? Mariota said.

?You can sit there and look at these guys and say they?ve played at the highest level and they?ve done it,? the UO quarterback added. ?It was a cool experience, and I feel I?ve learned a lot.?

There was also the opportunity for interaction with other college quarterbacks in attendance, one of them being AJ McCarron of national champion Alabama.

?It?s pretty cool to sit there and say, ?AJ has won it all,? and see how he handles it,? Mariota said.

While Mariota obviously has to take on more of a leading role with the Ducks in his second season as the starting quarterback, he was quick to mention others who have taken on more of that assignment. One of those is Grasu, who said, ?for me, the biggest thing, I?m always into leading by example but now I?ve got to get other guys doing what I?m doing.?

Defensively, several players were mentioned, from the secondary to the front line.

?We?re all leaders, we all have something different to bring to the table,? junior linebacker Derrick Malone Jr. said. ?I just feel like everyone is working hard.?

And also knowing the wait is nearly over for that first official practice, and eventually the start of a season.

?Every year I feel like it keeps coming faster and faster,? Malone said. ?It always feels like there?s not enough time to get ready ... (but) I?m excited to put the pads on and start hitting.?

Timbers tie Union, move closer to first in West

Published: Jul 21, 2013 at 8:14 AM PDT

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) ? The Portland Timbers continued their strong play on the road with a scoreless draw against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The Timbers (8-2-10) improved to 2-1-8 on the road and moved within three points of Real Salt Lake for first place in the Western Conference.

Portland also pushed its all-time mark to 2-0-2 against the Union.

The game was delayed 40 minutes to open the second half because of severe thunder and lightning in the surrounding area.

Following the delay, neither team was able to muster many scoring opportunities. The Union (8-6-7) had two corner kicks in three minutes of stoppage time but couldn't take advantage.

The Union played without manager John Hackworth, who was ejected from a victory over Chivas USA. Technical Director Rob Vartughian coached the Union.

How Often Do You Use Ethernet These Days?

How Often Do You Use Ethernet These Days?

I recently helped a friend pick out a USB-ethernet dongle for her MacBook Air. The Wi-Fi at her office goes in and out and she wanted to make sure she had a consistent connection when she brought her laptop in. That got me thinking that I haven't used ethernet on my laptop in a long time. But for certain tasks and devices there are still benefits. I have my smartTV plugged into ethernet (above) even though it's Wi-Fi ready, because I didn't want to deal with network glitches and password changes on a TV. How often have you busted out an ethernet cable lately? Connect to the World Wide Web below.

Dear Annie: I will be sending out wedding invitations soon. The problem is, I don?t know what to do about my grandparents. They are still friends with my ex-husband, who is unstable and a bit scary. Last year, they didn?t hesitate to give my phone number to his girlfriend when she asked. I was furious. They don?t have my new address because I fear they would give it to my ex and he would show up and cause?trouble.

I worry that when my grandparents get their invitation, they will give my ex the date, time, place and my return address. The fact that they are family and love me would not stop them. They are stubborn and thoughtless. They adore my ex and aren?t so crazy about my?fiance.

Should I send them the invitation and give them a stern talking to? I doubt it would do any good. Should I give them the information the day of the wedding so they have less time to share it? Of course, that would necessitate asking other family members not to tell them anything, which would be difficult. Any advice? ? Burned by?Family

Dear Burned: You always have the option of telling your grandparents after the wedding takes place. But we assume you want them to be there. You could send Grandma and Grandpa a handwritten invitation, omitting your return address and the location of the wedding. Arrange for a friend to pick them up and bring them to the ceremony. On the assumption that other relatives will spill the beans, you also could ask another friend to act as ?security? (or hire someone) to guard the door so your ex doesn?t show up?uninvited.

Football: Pittsburgh linebacker Deaysean Rippy expected to join CU Buffs

Deaysean Rippy (pittsburghpanthers.com)

The Colorado Buffaloes are expected to have a Rippy on their roster once again with an incoming transfer of Pittsburgh redshirt linebacker Deaysean Rippy. CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler reports that the deal is almost done for the 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker saying "Colorado is close to finalizing paperwork for Pitt linebacker Deaysean Rippy to enter school as a transfer with 2014 eligibility, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. Rippy should join the Buffs barring an unforeseen development, the source said, but the move is not yet done."

Rippy is the cousin of former Colorado linebacker Doug Rippy, who was released in May by the Denver Broncos after playing four seasons for the Buffs. Deaysean Rippy was a highly-touted recruit in the 2012 class, signing with Pittsburgh after his senior season at Sto-Rox High School in McKees Rocks, Penn. He had reported offers from Arizona, West Virginia, Alabama and Colorado before choosing Pittsburgh. Rippy was rated as a four-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout and had more than 150 total tackles and 16 sacks over his junior and senior seasons. He also had strong numbers on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver, posting 906 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final two years at the prep level.

Rippy redshirted last season at Pittsburgh and told the Tribune-Review he was leaving in May, saying "I was on the verge of being sure. I was kind of overwhelmed. I was an 18-year-old kid at the time. That's a lot of pressure." He was not on Pittsburgh's two-deep depth chart after the end of spring practice. Rippy (No. 11 in the video above) will sit out the 2013 season and join the Buffs in 2014, once the deal is finalized.

Concussion suit vs NCAA seeks class-action status

CHICAGO (AP) ? Attorneys suing the NCAA over its handling of head injuries asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit nationwide to include thousands of plaintiffs in a case they contend could change college sports forever.

The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed two years ago on behalf of several former athletes, including former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington. His attorney, Joseph Siprut, said he doesn't want to see the demise of college contact sports, including football, but safety is paramount.

"If changes aren't made, the sport is going to slowly die," he said. If they can't be reassured football is safe, parents will stop their kids from playing "and when the talent well dries up, that's how the sport dies."

The NCAA late Friday did immediately have a comment.

Concussions have become a major issue in sports in recent years. The NFL, NHL and college football, among others, have implemented stricter rules on hits to the head and player safety. But the NFL is mired in a lawsuit involving more than 4,000 former players seeking millions of dollars for problems they blame on head injuries during their careers.

The NCAA could wind up in a similar situation.

Attached to the class-action request is a report for the plaintiffs by a leading authority on concussions, Robert Cantu, who cites an internal NCAA survey from 2010. He said the NCAA found that nearly half of the college trainers who responded indicated they put athletes showing signs of a concussion back in the same game.

"It is well settled in the scientific community that an athlete must never be returned to play on the same day after a concussion diagnosis," said Cantu, who is medical director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The plaintiffs say the NCAA was lax in establishing a clear policy about dealing with concussions, leaving key decisions to individual schools or leagues.

"That is tantamount to doing nothing or even worse," said Siprut. "It creates the misperception that they have taken adequate measures when they haven't."

Arrington contends he suffered "numerous and repeated concussions" at Eastern Illinois, which is perhaps best known as the alma mater of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Saints coach Sean Payton. Arrington is seeking unspecified monetary damages and changes in policy including the establishment of a long-term medical monitoring program for injured athletes and new concussion guidelines for schools and coaches.

The lawsuit accuses the NCAA of failing student-athletes and "choosing instead to sacrifice them on an altar of money and profits" by neglecting to adopt stricter standards. Responding to Arrington's lawsuit in 2011, the NCAA said it found "gross misstatements" and said the governing body has been "concerned about the safety of all of its student-athletes, including those playing football, throughout its history."

The NCAA has taken recent steps to beef up awareness of how to treat possible head injuries, from legislation and outreach efforts to new rules on the playing field. Earlier Friday, the NCAA said it was awarding a $399,999 grant to fund a study into the long-term effects of head injuries in college sports.

Last fall, the NCAA said the rate of football-related concussions has remained steady over an eight-year period ? with 2.5 concussions reported for every 1,000 game-related exposures in 2011. The NCAA says there are estimates that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreation-related activities every year.

The concussions lawsuit is just one of several legal headaches for the NCAA. On Thursday, six current college football players were added as plaintiffs to a high-profile antitrust lawsuit that claims the NCAA owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used without compensation. The federal judge in that case is still mulling whether to turn the lawsuit into a class action.
