Tech Stocks: Facebook rally fails to ignite rest of tech sector

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Technology stocks were trading sideways Tuesday as Facebook Inc. posted solid gains, but the group was weighed down by declining shares of other major players.

Facebook /quotes/zigman/9962609/quotes/nls/fb FB +0.30% ?rallied 1.5% to $26.68, turning positive for the year. But shares of Oracle Corp. /quotes/zigman/19452757/quotes/nls/orcl ORCL +0.05% ?, Hewlett-Packard Co. /quotes/zigman/229301/quotes/nls/hpq HPQ -0.54% ?and IBM Corp. /quotes/zigman/230066/quotes/nls/ibm IBM -0.12% ?each posted fractional declines.

Google Inc. /quotes/zigman/93888/quotes/nls/goog GOOG -1.06% ?was off a fraction. The search giant announced that the head of its China division was stepping down.

Shares of Yahoo Inc. /quotes/zigman/59898/quotes/nls/yhoo YHOO -2.07% ?traded flat ahead of the Web portal?s second-quarter results. Chief Executive Marissa Mayer is also marking her first year at the helm of the Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet powerhouse.

The chip sector also gave the sector a lift as shares of Intel Corp. /quotes/zigman/20392/quotes/nls/intc INTC +0.91% ?, Advanced Micro Devices /quotes/zigman/216580/quotes/nls/amd AMD -2.42% ?and Texas Instruments /quotes/zigman/7971332/quotes/nls/txn TXN -0.32% ?advanced. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index /quotes/zigman/1468249 SOX +0.20% ?was up nearly 1%.

The Nasdaq Composite Index /quotes/zigman/12633936 COMP -0.44% ?was mostly flat, last down a fraction at 3,606, while the Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index /quotes/zigman/6015481 MSH -0.26% ? was up 0.1%.
